This beginner's class is great for those who are curious about the craft of Songwriting, or for those who are starting to dabble in writing themselves! The twist? We're going to make it fun by analyzing your favorite tunes. That's right, it's a customized learning experience. When you sign up for this course, you can post a few of your favorite songs/artists to the classroom page and I will incorporate them into our in-class discussion and analysis! Classes will follow the "Three L's" as I like to call them : "Listen, Label + Learn". 1) LISTEN: We'll carefully observe what's happening in the song + discuss it. 2) LABEL: We'll identify what songwriting techniques are at play. In doing so, we will develop useful songwriting terminology. 3) LEARN: Finally, by giving these concepts a name, we will have turned them into "tools" we can use! I'll teach you how to apply them to our own writing. Think of this class as a general overview that will inspire you hone your skills as a songwriter. It’s an opportunity to break apart our favorite music, so that we can reverse-engineer those useful tidbits into original songs! These "bits and pieces" include things like Song Structure, Lyrics, Melody, Groove, Chord Progressions, Production, Instrumentation, etc. Every time I teach this class, I witness students lighting up with excitement when we share their favorite songs and de-mystify what makes them so catchy and effective. I enjoy catering the experience directly to them - finding out what they most want to learn about, and prioritizing those topics. This course has been an amazing experience so far, and I’ve gotten a lot of requests for further courses on the topic, so I have created “Lyric Writing 1 + 2” classes, as well as a “Crash Course in Guitar Chords” for students who are new to the instrument and want to gain a quick understanding of how to self accompany (a useful skill for a songwriter!) So I hope you’ll check out all these complimentary offerings after this class is through! --- MORE ABOUT THIS CLASS: This is intended as a *prerequisite* for my other in-depth classes (1) Lyric Writing (2) Writer's Block Workshop (3) A Crash Course in Guitar Chords - No previous knowledge is required. - Content will be suitable for all ages. - Optional "further learning" activities will be assigned. Learners will have the option of sharing their work with the class if they would like to get even more out of the experience! - Meetings will be highly interactive - Learners are encouraged to share ideas, ask questions, and seek feedback.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Why me? I hope you will take look at my teacher bio where I've listed my credentials in depth: My Songwriting degree, awards, experience working in the field and mentorship from grammy-award-winning professionals. Not only am I uniquely qualified, but I have found a way to take the intimidation out of songwriting, so that anyone can approach the topic. I'm also currently working as a professional musician, so my perspectives are fresh and delivered with enthusiasm!
Why this class? I have designed the classes that I WISH were available when I was in grade school, and I would have really benefitted from. I believe that anyone can write a song, regardless of musical talent, and we all have something interesting to contribute... this class will be a fun first-step in that direction!
