Class Experience

Learn all about reptiles as we meet our incredible cold blooded animal ambassadors! This one time class will introduce students to six reptile animal ambassadors. Each animal ambassador will be introduced to the students giving specific information about each animal and covering a variety of topics including:
Animal classes/groups - learn the characters of what makes a reptile a reptile and how they compare to mammals, birds, fish, and amphibians.
Animal adaptations - each of our animal ambassadors have specific adaptations to survive their ecosystems. We will demonstrate those adaptions so they can see first hand how each animal survives.
Biomes - reptiles come from many different biomes and habitats. We will explore each of the habitats our ambassadors are native to.
The difference between snakes and lizards - We know what you are thinking, but not all lizards have legs.
The difference between turtles and tortoises - we will meet Shelly our red footed tortoise and discuss the difference between tortoises and turtles.
Pet reptiles - we will learn what qualities to look for if you are interested in a pet reptile and what reptiles can make a great pet.

Featured animals:
Tripod - three legged alligator
Noodle - albino boa constrictor
Larry - the legless lizard (yes, they have no legs!)
Shelly - red footed tortoise
Megatron - bearded dragon

The teaching style is a discussion style class. There will be ample time to ask questions and talk directly to the teacher. This is a highly interactive class with live animals as our educators instead of PowerPoints and videos. No background knowledge is required to attend the class. If students have a pet reptile, favorite reptile book or even stuffed animal they can bring that to class.

Wildlife Encounters is a state and federally licensed educational wildlife refuge. *We do require a minimum of 4 students to attend class. If we do not have four students signed up class will unfortunately be canceled and you will receive a full refund.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Kip Smith. I am the Education Director at Wildlife Encounters and have been educating students around the world virtually and in person for 15 years. I've always been fascinated by animals and our natural planet which led to my career in wildlife conservation & education. I LOVE the energy and enthusiasm that students who are interested in animals bring to the classroom. It's my passion to teach about animals and love sharing knowledge with others who share the same passion.

Educating others about wildlife conservation has given me some incredible opportunities to study animals in their natural habitats around the globe and expanding our online reach through our YouTube channel. You may of seen some of our videos on CNN, The Today Show, Reddit, CBS Morning News and while working with Jack Hanna and Wild Kingdoms Jim Fowler.

When I'm not speaking to public groups or teaching online I am working on wildlife photography and filming. I have had the opportunity to photograph and film animals all over the world including:
Crocodiles - Working with ACES (American Crocodile Education Sanctuary) I had the opportunity to help catch an injured crocodile. Which was later rehabilitated and released. You can watch our crocodile rescue on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQGhoYCkyrw
Puerto Rico - Studying the rare Cuban Rock Iguana with the University of Puerto Rico we got up close to learn about their conservation efforts for this species. You can watch our video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVutqCrcfN4
