Homework
1-2 hours per week. Learners will be expected to work independently outside of class time to write 1-2 minute speeches.
Assessment
My goal is to give positive encouragement and build self-confidence. I will provide gentle guideance to improve writing and performance, but the overall goal is to give them lots of opportunities to practice in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
This course is designed to help students learn how to write and deliver effective speeches. We will cover different types of speeches, how to write a speech and how to present a speech. Public speaking is the #1 fear for most people, and our goal is to help learners conquer that fear in a fun and supportive environment. In addition to the learning outcomes, our primary goal is that each learner walks away from this course with improved confidence. 

Throughout the course, they will write and present Impromptu, Demonstration, Informative, Persuasive, and Extemporaneous speeches. While developing these proficiencies students will also learn performance skills, descriptive writing skills, learn how to edit, and improve their text as well as others writing.  

By the completion of the course, students will be able to:
 Write an: Impromptu, Demonstration, Informative, Persuasive, and Extemporaneous speeches
 Use tone, rate and volume to improve the effectiveness of their delivery.
 Improve their ability to think of reasons and examples quickly (Impromptu)
 Will dramatically improve their descriptive writing and ability to convey complex concepts (Demonstration/Informative)
 Students will learn what persuades people and ways to compel people to change their behavior of actions (Persuasion)
 Students will significantly improve their critical thinking skills and understanding of how to construct a credible argument (Extemporaneous)

Mr. Bill Thompson has has coached and instructed speech and debate for more than 30 years with a variety of University, high school, & middle school programs around the country. In the last decade he has coached 7 high school national finalists and 11 middle school national finalists. He has coached 5 high school national champions and 4 middle school national champions in his career.

Bill has an extensive history of building curriculum to teach speech and debate in both intensive speech and debate camp and classroom settings. Central to his curriculum is a focus on helping learners find their voices and helping them develop skills that allow them to hear and appreciate others voices. His classes are designed to meet learners where they are and develop their research, refutation, speech writing, speaking and overall rhetorical skills.
