US Grade 5 - 6
This is a one-time class introducing methods of multi-digit division. I think it's important that students learn different ways of solving a problem in math. This class is recommended for students in grades 4, 5, and 6 who have experience with division and multiplication. Throughout the hour of this class, I will demonstrate each method using the same division problem. Students are encouraged to have paper and pencil and follow along. Students will explore alternative ways of thinking about division using place value, standard algorithm, and expanded notation. Some also refer to place value as open area, and expanded notation as stacking. Students will learn all of these terms as part of the lesson. At the end of the lesson students will compare and contrast the 3 methods that we learned. I will offer a longer version of this class in the summer where we learn more about each method.
