Class Experience

In this highly interactive, one-time prerequisite class to Latin Level 1 for Kids, students will begin speaking the ancient language of Latin. Through lively discussions, visual images including words, optional note-taking, and imitating my speaking, students will learn how to pronounce Latin and generate simple sentences—some of them funny. Also, because 60% of English has Latin in it, the kids will learn Latin word roots that can increase their English vocabularies. There might even be the opportunity to invent wacky English words with Latin roots!

At minimum, we will start using use the present tense (1st and 2nd person singular) of the verb esse (to be) as well as 1st person singular forms of a few regular verbs. They also will learn some nouns using the subject (Nominative) case. The material will progress according to learner readiness and interest.

This one-time class establishes an initial foundation for a weekly class (coming soon).

I will provide each learner a listing of vocabulary and roots, plus a summary of how to use the verbs and nouns we cover in class.

I am looking forward to seeing you!

Supply List
During the week before the class meets, I will provide (on the classroom page) printable flash cards for households with printing capability. We will use my copy during class, but I recommend that each student has a set. The Latin word goes on one side, and the English translation on the other side. If you are not able to print them, please cut five sheets of paper into fourths, and you can make your own flash cards in advance or during the class. (The English translations are in the document.) In addition, I recommend that each student have a clipboard with a few sheets of paper (blank or lined) and a pencil and eraser. Colored pencils or crayons are optional and may be helpful.

I taught beginning elementary school Latin as part of my teaching career. I also created and taught a private extracurricular program in Latin and Latin roots for elementary school-ages students.

I enjoy instilling self-confidence and motivation in students to learn unfamiliar material in ways that are relevant to their familiar, everyday lives. This involves a combination of discovery, discussion, and practice, with an age-appropriate sense of humor. Establishing a low-risk atmosphere and a comfortable rapport, I enjoy connecting with each individual learner, valuing the unique interests, strengths, and eager curiosity the students bring to class.
