What will be taught? Students are first introduced to their junior counters by naming them. Kids love to name their tools, and when we come up with fun names that we use throughout the course. Next, we learn the parts of the junior counter. This allows us to refer to aspects of the manipulative easily. Third, we learn positions. Positions are important because they show how different positions correspond to a number value. Lastly, we learn movement. Movement is where the magic happens. We...
By the end of this class, students will be confident and comfortable performing the following: 1. Naming their junior counters 2. Identify all parts of the junior counter 3. Correctly identifying positions and correctly position numbers 0-9 4. Correctly transition positions when asked (add and subtract numbers 0-9)
To fully engage in this course, learners must have a junior counter. The junior counter was designed by Ameerah, your class instructor, and is a patented, adaptable, simplified abacus that allows students to practice independently with the class.
