Class Experience

Part of the Learning Accelerated Series (LAS) of classes, this first in a series, 2 week course is geared to non-readers only. In this small-step, highly engaging and carefully sequenced series of lessons, students will learn letter sounds and beginning word attack skills.

True to my accelerated teaching style, where students can gain 1 to 2.5 years of skills in only months, Fun and Fast Beginning Reading uses a teacher-guided, award-winning, research-backed, mildly animated computer program that provides on-screen instruction. This format is extremely engaging for students who are non- or struggling readers. Efficient, accelerated instruction is facilitated by use of the this scripted program by streamlining instruction and alleviating unnecessary language and conversational "bunny trails." Having a teacher with 40 years of teaching experience implement the program brings additional level of structure and fluency.

The combination of live and computer instruction forms the basis of each session. Each lesson introduces a few things that are new and weaves them into applications that involve familiar words and skills.

Participants will complete 1 lesson per day, for a total of 8 lessons.

*PLEASE READ - An important note about the realities of the online classroom and my particular teaching methods: My classes have a distinct interactive component. Students are required to respond either by voice or movement a great deal during every session. Every response called for is actually an assessment; and allows me to see whether concepts have been grasped or if re-teaching or additional practice is necessary before moving on. The nature of our wonderful online space sometimes makes this assessing quite the challenge. Much like a cell phone, ambient background noise is amplified in the online classroom. Talking, babies crying, dogs barking etc. become difficult hurdles to overcome. Additionally, we at Outschool serve students world-wide. Therefore, our audience is often on different web speeds over vastly different distances, where lag time and echoes can also hinder instruction. Because of all of the above, please know that I may find it necessary to mute students' microphones. Also know that if I must do so, it is only in attempt to hear (and see) all responses. It is not the CHILD that is being muted, but the ambient noise, echo or lag - and never as a penalty. All that said, in order to assure the best instruction for everyone, as well as allow me to assess the work of your children, please have them work in the quietest space available. Thank you for your understanding :)

I am an elementary/middle school level math and reading specialist with a PASSION for teaching reading!

While my specialty is catching students up who are significantly behind in record time, I began my teaching career at the preschool level and hold a permanent Nursery School Certificate. Because little ones are naturally inquisitive and energetic, I find them uniquely enjoyable to teach :).

Having also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education, a Master of Science in Special Education as well as several teaching certificates in two states, I have taught in public and private schools and I continue to serve students of all ages, grades and skill levels; from those with various degrees of Autism to the naturally advanced, Pre-K through College.
