PLEASE NOTE: this is a lecture style class with opportunity for questions and not an interactive "join in" class - therefore it may be more suited to advanced students and could be challenging for students who at the younger end of the age bracket. DISCOUNTS: First Class 50% off - this discount is already included in the price (usually $16 per class) ▬▬▬▬▬▬ CLASS INTRO ▬▬▬▬▬ Welcome to the "Intro to Earth Science: Geology" series, which focuses on some of the most dramatic physical forces on Earth, with the aim of making learning fun and exhilarating. I think making lessons enjoyable and bringing science to life is the best way to get kids engaged and learning without realising it. My classes focus on the Geology and Geophysics part of Earth Science. No previous experience necessary. This is simplified version of my Exiting Earth Sciences classes aimed at younger children. Please note that children in the lower end of the age range may find some topics slightly advanced for them. This course focuses on some of the most exciting Geological and Geophysical processes that formed the Earth and still move the continents today: building mountains, setting of earthquakes and feeding volcanic eruptions. We also look at the Carbon Cycle and how this is linked to the Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming. This is not a complete Earth Science curriculum but covers many of the key aspects of the Geology part of many courses taught in schools. More details of this 8 week course can be found below. No previous experience necessary. All classes are also available individually and you can try one of those and then get a refund if you decide to book this 8 weeks course afterwards - please contact me for details. ▬▬▬▬▬▬ CLASS SUMMARY ▬▬▬▬▬ 1) ROCKS AND THE SCIENCE OF GEOLOGY 2) MINERALS, GEMS & PRECIOUS METALS 3) HOW THE EARTH FORMED, PANGEA AND THE ROCK CYCLE 4) THE STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH - SEISMOLOGY AND MAGNETISM 5) SEDIMENTARY ROCKS - FAULTS & FOLDS 6) SEDIMENTARY ROCKS - FOSSILS 7) IGNEOUS ROCKS - VOLCANOES, KILLER ASH AND MAGMA LAKES 8) THE CARBON CYCLE, GLOBAL WARMING AND RENEWABLE ENERGY 9) THE LAST HOUSE OF THE DINOSAURS 10) GEOLOGY OF NORTH AMERICA ▬▬▬▬▬▬ CLASS STYLE ▬▬▬▬▬ I use powerpoint presentations for all my classes, so I can mix text and multimedia and make the class more interesting. This class will be run using an "intro-discussion-repeat" format. This means I will take a few minutes to introduce a topic, using images or videos wherever appropriate in order to bring the subject alive. Then we will pause to take questions and make sure everyone is keeping up. Then we'll move on to the next exciting sub-topic and supporting material, and then pause for questions after that one too. This means that you can enjoy the class however you like. Speak up and get involved and ask questions, or just listen and enjoy with no pressure. If you like this class then you check out my full "Basic Intro to Earth Science" course, with subjects cherry picked to choose the most interesting, accessible and relevant Earth Science subjects for kids, so they learn to enjoy exploring the world around them. ▬▬▬▬▬▬ LINKED TOPICS ▬▬▬▬▬ Each class in this 8 week course can be booked individually and I run a similar 10 week course on Geology or a 16 week course on Earth Science for older kids.
Learning Goals
To discover and learn without realising it, because you are having fun! By the end of this course students will be able to explain where the different kinds of rocks are made and how they interact in the rock cycle. They will also be able to explain most rock forming processes and the Geological history and structure of the Earth.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Some classes talks about Global Warming and Climate Change causing more frequent natural disasters. It also talks about mass extinctions including the possibility of humans causing one now (including ourselves) and has some drawn images of animals dying to become fossils. It is delivered in a upbeat manner with positive solutions (eg: switching to renewable energy), but some students may find these topics distressing.
This class uses screen share to show PowerPoint slides with text and pictures. Some classes also show short videos. No other 3rd party tools are used.
