Class Experience

In this class, learners will be introduced to division through the use of candy manipulatives and equal groups. Using a slideshow for visual learners, we will first complete an ice breaker game to get to know one another, then we will discuss the meaning of division. After our discussion, I will model how to build a visual representation of a division problem and solve it, we will build and solve a few together, then students will build their own and show it/explain their answer to the class (if they choose to do so). Students may use any type of candy or treat, as well as non-food items, but wrapped, chewy fruit candies are excellent, no mess manipulatives, and can be reused over and over since the wrapper stays on. They also make a nice treat at the end of all of our hard work and learning.

**This class is meant for learners who are fluent with counting forwards and backwards within 100 and skip counting by 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s. Students should also be fluent with addition, subtraction, and basic multiplication. No prior knowledge of division is needed. This class would also be good for learners who have been introduced to basic division (ex. 10/2=5), but struggle with having a concrete understanding of division.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to model and solve division facts using equal groups (10/2=5).

Other Details

Supply List
*Individually wrapped fruit chew candies (or another small item that is easy to manipulate and work with: Goldfish, M&Ms, Skittles, pennies, etc). You will need approximately 20 in a bag or container so they don't fall on the floor easily.
*A dark writing utensil that can easily be seen on camera (marker or pen)
*Division recording sheet (available to print in class files upon registration)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hello learners and parents!

My name is Megan and I have nearly 10 years of professional education experience. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Special Education and Elementary Education (all subjects) and a Master's degree as a K12 Reading Specialist.

From teaching in the classroom, to teaching online and private tutoring, to providing literacy and math coaching for intervention programs, I have worked with nearly every grade level and content area K-8th.

I have worked with struggling and reluctant learners before so it is my passion to make learning fun for all abilities and levels! The areas I'm most passionate about are literacy and math. You may also see some baking or cooking classes as these are some of my favorite pastimes.

Thanks for stopping by! I can't wait to meet your learner in class!
