In this class, learners will be introduced to division through the use of candy manipulatives and equal groups. Using a slideshow for visual learners, we will first complete an ice breaker game to get to know one another, then we will discuss the meaning of division. After our discussion, I will model how to build a visual representation of a division problem and solve it, we will build and solve a few together, then students will build their own and show it/explain their answer to the class (if they choose to do so). Students may use any type of candy or treat, as well as non-food items, but wrapped, chewy fruit candies are excellent, no mess manipulatives, and can be reused over and over since the wrapper stays on. They also make a nice treat at the end of all of our hard work and learning. **This class is meant for learners who are fluent with counting forwards and backwards within 100 and skip counting by 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s. Students should also be fluent with addition, subtraction, and basic multiplication. No prior knowledge of division is needed. This class would also be good for learners who have been introduced to basic division (ex. 10/2=5), but struggle with having a concrete understanding of division.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to model and solve division facts using equal groups (10/2=5).
