Intro to D&D Dungeons & Dragons Characters for Complete Beginners

If you have never played Dungeons & Dragons before and are interested in designing your own character for D&D 5th edition, this will be the course for you! This is a great start for those completely new to tabletop roleplaying games (RPG).

Class Experience

This course is for those very new to Dungeons & Dragons and have never played before. We will cover the basics of making a character, beginning with explaining just what a character is, and the types that are available. I will use some slides to show examples of different types, and also to emphasis some of the key words, some of which aren't in common usage (such as Dexterity and Charisma.) Other times I may put a graphic on the screen to illustrate a point in a fun way. I will ask a lot of questions, and will make use of the class's ideas and suggestions.

My goal is to inspire creativity and have fun! If I can make this entertaining, then students will be motivated to grasp the simple mathematics involved (rolling three dice and adding them together) or to later on independently invent their own characters. You can expect a sense of humor, a

Learning Goals

A basic Dungeons & Dragons character is comprised of a race, such as human, elf, or dwarf, and a class, such as wizard, fighter, barbarian, rogue, or cleric. We will explain these choices, and talk about examples. We will also explain the six basic ability scores, and ways to randomly (or selectively) create them. Backgrounds are a new requirement in 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons, and we will discuss them.

Parental Guidance
The material covered is a fantasy roleplaying game. Abstract discussion of fantasy violence (6 points of damage and the monster died) may be discussed. I will ensure that the content remains suitable for this age group.
Supply List
Students will get the most out of the class with a piece of paper, a pencil, and some dice. Alternatively a Google Doc, and an open tab in Chrome can be used to roll dice as well. There is a free quick start to D&D which students can use before or afterwards in order to continue their journey, but I will use the Player's Handbook in class. I will provide electronic copies of the free Character Sheet PDF provided by Wizards of the Coast.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hi there! My name is Joe, and I joined Outschool so I can reach even more students with the subjects I am most excited to teach. I am presently a long term substitute teacher at the middle school level. I have graduate degrees in Military History and Education Technology, so this is a natural platform for me. I am also a scout leader in two different elementary level scouting programs, and wrapping up 25 years of military service in the near future. So, you could say I have a variety of experiences to share!

I think its important when teaching online to make it a "lean-forward" activity where students are engaged and active, and not a "lean-backwards" one like watching TV. Its important to me to get students involved, and I will be frequently checking in with them during the class. I also want to make the most of technology, and will use video, rich media, and other means to try to make content come alive!

I learned a while ago that children cannot set a goal for something they don't know exists. I hope that by broadening their horizons I can enable them to set goals for themselves that change the world, or at least bring some happiness to it for themselves and their friends

I live in Connecticut with my wife, three elementary age children, and an attack cat. When I am not on Outschool, I am probably planning a Webelos Den Meeting, or designing a STEM Scouts meeting where I am Lab Manager and unit founder. I am also a lifelong player of the collectible card game Magic: the Gathering, and the tabletop game D&D, with 20 years of experience in both. I credit these games with some of my most valued friendships, and am interested in how it applies to social development, creative problem solving, and literacy.
