Why learn cursive? This class is a great introduction to the world of cursive hand-writing. Many schools in America no longer teach this skill. Often, students are curious when they see script and text that looks different from the standard print they’re used to reading and writing. We will begin by discussing why cursive writing (and reading) is an important to skill to learn. Students and I will look at various examples from the world around us (through pictures) of where cursive is used in various billboards, branding, signs, art, signatures, and even in hand-written notes. We'll talk about the basic rules of style and form (posture, slanting paper, and letters uniformly slanting), learn some beginner strokes, and even try our hand at some lower case letters. So fun! :) Intro to Cursive is a way students can get their "feet wet" to discover if cursive writing is a skill they'd like to cultivate and grow. This course will be light and fun, as we try something new together. More detailed classes can be followed as students grow interested in mastering penmanship and accuracy. My teaching style is always one of encouragement and aimed at building confidence, one step-at-a-time. I work to engage students at their comfort level, and give as much guidance as they need. I hope to spark an interest in each student to explore and learn cursive writing as it truly is a beautiful art-form that has both professional and personal applications.
Students will learn the importance of reading and writing cursive. They will learn basic rules of being successful with proper posture and form, practice writing beginning strokes, and start writing some alphabet lower case letters.
A piece of lined paper (or print the one the teacher will provide), a sharpened pencil with a good eraser, and an eager attitude! :)
Aside from teaching cursive, I had the privilege of learning cursive writing and reading when I was in elementary school. I have taught cursive for 2 years in a classroom setting to 4-8th graders at a Classical School. I have also used cursive in my art designs for my personal and professional projects for the past 15 years. I was taught cursive in primary school, and studied beyond to learn various techniques, variations of style, and calligraphy. It is truly a beautiful and wide-ranging subject!
