Class Experience

Welcome to the world of Engineering Design! Students will learn to use several features of Fusion 360, one of the leading software tools used to design and modify product prototypes.

The lesson will be introduced and modeled by the teacher on screen. Students will complete the steps with the teacher with plenty of time to check for understanding and troubleshoot problems. Students are encouraged to sign on with two devices, if possible (one to display Fusion 360 and one for the Zoom meeting, but this is not required).

Students will use the following features in creating the dice:
Sketching
Extrude
Fillets
Cylinders
Spheres
Holes
Patterns
Extrude cut
Text cuts
Graphics cuts

Students do not need any prior engineering or drafting experience, but they do need good basic computer skills and a fast internet connection. We will be using Autodesk Fusion 360, an industry-standard cloud-based design platform, which can run on 64-bit operating systems on either Windows or Mac-based PCs. you can use the personal version for this class (the license is for a shorter time period and not all features are available, but it should work for what we cover in this course). course.

Software is available here and should be downloaded before class: https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/personal. Students younger than 13 will need a parent to create an Autodesk account in order to download the program.

I have recently changed the length of the class as many sections were not having time to complete all 6 sides of the dice. It is 1 hour 20 minutes. If we finish early, I will have an additional activity or accept student-directed questions and projects.
Learning Goals
Students will get a good introduction to CAD (computer aided drafting and design) and learn to use several features to create the faces on the dice.

Fusion 360 - personal or educational version: https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/personal is required to participate in this course. Students need to be 13 years old and create an account using an email account and personal details with Autodesk in order to download the software. This can be done by a parent for the student.
