Description
Class Experience
Come explore Pre-Chemistry with lecture videos, Nearpod interactive slides, and hands-on labs and activities! This course will cover many topics which are aligned with NGSS (science standards) for middle school: atoms, electrons, periodic table, chemical reactions, balancing equations, carbon/organic chemistry, solutions, acids and bases, and nuclear chemistry. Nearpod includes teaching slides alternating with: collaboration boards, matching challenges, virtual field trips, Time to Climb...
Learners will understand and apply the patterns found in the periodic table. Learners will learn to balance chemical equations. Learners will be able to identify various solutions, acids, and bases. Learners will understand concepts of carbon/organic chemistry and nuclear chemistry.
I have a BS degree in Nutrition and Food Science (pre-med track) from Florida State University. I later became a certified middle school science teacher and taught middle school science in the Florida public school system for 5 years. I have been an online teacher for Outschool and other platforms for 3.5 years. I'm also a homeschool momma :)
Homework outside of class is optional. Hands-on labs will be performed in class videos. Other projects and hands-on activities will be done outside of class time (less than one hour per week). For learners who are having trouble applying the skills of chemistry, I may ask them to watch the lesson and do some of the nearpod activities again.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learners will be assessed by their completion of nearpod activity slides in nearpod, classroom participation, and/or hands-on activities. If you would like an overall grade issued, please let me know during the first week of class. All projects turned in will be issued a grade regardless.
No live meetings, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Please monitor your learner's use of scissors during labs/hands-on activities. Parental Guidance is suggested when using the resources used in this class (learners will not be required to create an account for any of the following resources): *Youtube: Links will be provided within the nearpod slides and/or the Outschool classroom. *CK12.org: Links will be provided within the nearpod slides and/or the Outschool classroom. Account creation is not required. *Wikipedia: Links will be provided within the nearpod slides and shared on screen. *Google Docs and Google Forms: Links may be provided to a Google Doc or Google Form (learner's email addresses will not be visible to me, they will be prompted to click "copy" to have their own copy). *Nearpod: Links will be provided in the Outschool classroom for self-paced Nearpod slides. No account creation is required.
