Get ready to explore real colorful reactions and mysterious metals—just like real scientists! In this fun class, you'll learn how the world works at the tiniest level and discover that science is way cooler than you thought!

Students will be introduced to the concept of chemical reactions using fire and burning as a real-world example. We’ll talk about the "fire triangle" (fuel, heat, oxygen) and explore everyday combustion examples like candles, fireplaces, and engines. 

What Is Combustion?

We’ll observe and discuss what happens after something burns (like soot, ash, and gases). Students will learn that combustion changes matter and releases energy. We’ll introduce the idea of reactants and products through guided discussion and fun activities like drawing reaction diagrams.

What’s Left After Fire?

We’ll explore how carbon atoms connect to form the “skeleton” of living things and so many everyday materials. Using basic models and visuals, students will learn how atoms link up in chains and rings, and why carbon is so special.

Meet Carbon ... The Building Block of Life

Students will learn how to identify and name simple molecules like methane, ethane, and propane using fun memory tricks and hands-on naming games. We’ll relate these molecules to real-life objects like fuels, plastics, and food ingredients.

Naming Simple Organic Molecules

We’ll dive into how metals like iron, aluminum, and zinc react with air, water, and acids. Students will observe video demonstrations of fizzing, bubbling, and color changes, and learn to recognize that these are signs of chemical reactions.

Metals in Action

We’ll compare how different metals react and why some are more “active” than others. Students will explore the idea of reactivity through interactive sorting games and discussion, laying a foundation for future lessons in reactivity series and corrosion.

Why Do Metals React Differently?

Students will be introduced to transition metals like copper, iron, and nickel. We’ll explore why these metals often create vivid color changes during reactions and where we see these metals in real life (e.g., coins, paint, electronics).

The Colorful World of Transition Metals

We’ll explore how transition metals can speed up reactions without getting used up themselves—introducing the concept of catalysts through simple analogies and videos. We’ll review what we’ve learned throughout the course and celebrate our young chemists’ progress!
