Class Experience

So, picture this: you’re minding your own business drawing as usual, then suddenly an image of a character pops into your head. Excited, you flip to a fresh page in your sketchbook to draw them out. After all, this character is an original and you can’t wait to bring them to life on paper. However, just as you position your pencil to start, you stop. Thoughts start racing through your head: “Wait, how do I this?” “I know what I want to draw, but don’t know where to start!” Confused, you put your pencil down and try to think it out. “Well, maybe I can do this- no that.” You try and try, but no avail. Disappointed and frustrated, you put your pencil down. Gritting your teeth trying to accept that the great vision you saw in your head will just have to stay there.

Or will it?

Welcome to the Character Drawing Class! In this 5-day full course you will learn the steps on how to create a full character design; complete with poses, face expressions and backstory. We’ll cover how to build a character: design, personality, backstory, their purpose/ role in it, and the setting. This includes the steps on how to do all of these things that have been used by industry professionals to this day.

Whether you’re into creating a comic, cartoon, video game or novel by the end of class you will know how to fill in those blanks and finish every great creation you start!

Character Drawing is a great opportunity for any student who wants to break into the world of creative story telling because it helps them learn how to take their vision and develop, refine and show it to the world. This class exposes every learner to just how much thought and effort it takes to create the stories they love reading, watching, playing or all three. In addition, exposing them to sharing ideas in an open environment and receiving critique, which helps to further refine their ideas and build confidence.

This camp is great for students who take their art seriously and are ready to take their craft to the next level!

Students will design an original character from scratch or take a character they’ve already designed by answering the 5 W’s: WHO (are they), WHAT (are they doing?), WHEN (are they doing it?), WHERE (are they doing it?) and WHY (are they doing it?) This process will take place over the first 4 days. The last day will be dedicated to sharing their creations and receiving critique from their classmates.

The information will be given via packet that’s available to download in the classroom. The first 30 minutes will go towards covering the information, which will be presented via powerpoint, short videos, packet and dialogue. The last 60 minutes will be studio time where students are free to work, ask questions and converse with classmates.

This is a camp goes for 5 consecutive days (Mon-Fri), with each session lasting 90 minutes. This camp is offered two separate times of the month based upon the age group: 10-13 and 14-16. Character Building is offered in 3 different levels based upon artistic ability (overall skill level, work load, prior knowledge of topics covered during the course and ability to apple them under a time constraint).

**THIS IS NOT A CLASS THAT TEACHES STUDENTS HOW TO DRAW. EACH STUDENT MUST ALREADY HAVE DRAWING KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS CLASS FOR LEARNERS WHO DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DRAW.

**THIS CLASS HAS LIMITED REFUND POLICY. MEANING, REFUNDS WILL ONLY BE GIVEN UP UNTIL A WEEK BEFORE CLASS STARTS OR WITHIN 24 HOURS OF PURCHASE (UNTIL THE CLASS STARTS).

**PLEASE NOTE THAT CLASS TIME FOR THE LAST DAY WILL VARY AND MAY END EARLY DEPENDING UPON THE TOTAL NUMBER OF STUDENTS.

Learning Goals

Students will learn the skills and tips of the beginning stages to design a character: using line, shape and form to draw out a character and background, using photo references to make poses and backgrounds, how to use creative writing to build a story from the ground up and how to give and receive critique for their artwork. In addition, students will have the chance to build/grow their imagination, social skills and confidence via interaction with their classmates.
