Intro to Art Journals: Drawing, Painting, Printing, and Collage
Class experience
Think sketchbook + art projects + journal = art journal! These are also known as altered books or visual journals. These books become collections of visual expressions, techniques, and self-reflection. Artists will combine different media and subjects and create thematic journeys of their own time and place. We explore what an art journal is and how to get started by taking a visual tour of my books. We will look at various media and techniques I typically incorporate. We will discuss...
My goal is to inspire students to tap into their imagination and spark their desire for self-expression by introducing them to an art journal (aka altered book/visual journal) and try different mixed-media techniques. I hope they plan to continue creating this journal long after the class has ended.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from UCLA and spent my first 10 years out of college working with professional designers and photographers in the publishing world. I was exposed to an eclectic variety of art media and styles. Later, as a volunteer art teacher, I was introduced to altered journals and fell in love with combining journaling and art together, so I made my own! I have enjoyed art journaling for many years and have worked on my own journal as a great way to create a distinctive piece of art that also included personal reflections, notations, and adornments.
Homework Offered
No specific homework is assigned, but students are encouraged to finish pages we start in class and explore other options and media.Assessments Offered
Throughout the class, I will have artists share their pages with me to see their progress and ask questions as they arise to ensure they are comfortable with the media, the process, and their progress. We will engage in respectful and relaxed conversation as we work to discuss the goals for their book and brainstorm ideas to get them there.Grades Offered
An old hardbound book with a removable paper jacket: 6 x 9 or larger, preferably with a sewn spine (not glued, but it will work if that is all you have), matte-finish pages (anything nonglossy), and a nonglossy front cover Pencil Bar eraser Ruler Colored pencils Markers Black Sharpie markers (Fine and Ultra Fine) Oil pastels Chalk pastels Watercolors, acrylics, and brushes Rubber cement Magazines, photos, scrapbook paper Glue and adornments, 3D memorabilia Mat to lay underneath ** it is okay if you do not have all of these things but it gives other options, some of which I will be showing in class as time allows.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
