WHAT IS COVERED IN CLASS?

There will be a topic lesson and practice on a few AMC 8 problems. Here is the list of topics:

Week 1: Measures of central tendency (average and mean)
Week 2: Measures of central tendency (median and mode)
Week 3 and 4: Percentage
Week 5-7: Geometry
Week 8: Greatest common factor
Week 9: Least common multiple
Week 10: Prime factorization
Week 11 and 12: Probability

Students can drop in or out during any session. We will not build on prior weeks.

Recommended for homeschoolers or as an after-school supplement class.

CLASS EXPERIENCE

Students will get instruction from the teacher as they work through new topics together. If a student needs assistance when the teacher is teaching, we recommend that students use chat so that other students can continue to attempt the problems.
During these sessions, we will discuss strategies and techniques. We want students to be introduced to the AMC test topics and thoroughly understand them.

This class is for students who do not have the knowledge base and exposure to the topics in the AMC. In general, we will go at a medium pace, rather than a fast pace. So students will have time to think and attempt every problem type, but they may not be able to solve every problem if they run out of time.

Extremely advanced students may want to try the competition class that is faster pace Competition math 5-6.

----

PRE-REQUISITES AND PLACEMENT TEST

Advanced students who have completed the 5th-grade math curriculum would be ready to attempt problems such as these. Students who have taken our Singapore math methods classes through level 6 will find a lot of these topics are a refresher.

This is a good class to take if you get a score of less than 7 in this short placement test: https://0u7btq2t.paperform.co

SAMPLE QUESTIONS

Here are some sample questions like those we cover in class. If your student can do 2 out of 4 of these questions, then the class is a good fit. You can also take the pre-assessment as noted above.

1. How many different four-digit numbers can be formed by rearranging the four digits in 2004?

2. After Sally takes 20 shots, she has made 55% of her shots. After she takes 5 more shots, she raises her percentage to 56%. How many of the last 5 shots did she make?

3. Handy Aaron helped a neighbor for 1 1/4 hours on Monday, 50 minutes on Tuesday, from 8:20 to 10:45 on Wednesday morning, and a half hour on Friday. He is paid $3 per hour. How much did he earn for the week?

4. Niki usually leaves her cell phone on. If her cell phone is on but she is not actually using it, the battery will last for 24 hours. If she is using it constantly, the battery will last for only 3 hours. Since the last recharge, her phone has been on for 9 hours, and during that time she has used it for 60 minutes. If she doesn’t use it anymore but leaves the phone on, how many more hours will the battery last?

AMC 8 DESCRIPTION FROM THE CREATORS

Description of the AMC 8 from the creators (https://www.maa.org/math-competitions/amc-8)
"The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.

The material covered on the AMC 8 includes topics [and more] from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum. Possible topics include but are not limited to: counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables. In addition, some of the later questions may involve linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course."

DISCLAIMER

We are not in any way affiliated with MAA. This is a class that provides an opportunity for students to ask questions and gain clarity on the steps and strategies for the challenging problems in each test set. We will leave the easier questions for students to work out on their own. Or we recommend that they can take the 3/4 class that will cover the easier questions.

Other Details

Supply List
We design and provide all materials to enhance teaching instruction.

Students will get a worksheet to print out before each class. Occasionally there will be an optional activity that students can do before class. Then, we start each class with an investigation that gets them thinking about the application of math in real life.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hi! I'm so glad you are interested in our math classes for elementary through high school students.

We offer 2 different types of math classes that help students engage and learn math at a deeper and advanced level: Singapore Math Classes and Competition Math classes.

Foster your student's love for math through our Singapore Math classes using our Hello Math! Curriculum. Our signature Singapore Math approach helps students build a solid math foundation that will boost students' confidence. Our kind teachers help break down complex math topics in ways that help students to grow and succeed.

Our Competition Math classes encourages critical thinking. Students learn different ways to problem-solve challenging questions and share solutions with their classmates. Our patient teachers guide students if they get stuck. It's a class best taken in conjunction with our Singapore Math classes.

My name is Ingrid, and I am the owner of Tampa Bay Test Prep. I have a BA in mathematics from UC Berkeley, an M.Ed from Holy Names University, and am certified in Mathematics at the middle school and high school levels (California, Florida). I have over 18 years of tutoring and teaching. Our organization is special in that we build our own curriculum so every worksheet you see in our program is tailored to help your student develop long-term success!

My fellow teachers include Math, Computer Science, Engineering, and Physics majors with a love of mathematics, as well as experienced teachers! Together we want to give your student a strong foundation in mathematics and mathematical thinking.

We also offer one on one lessons where students can meet with teachers one on one to get extra help or personalized help, a student-focused plan, tailored assignments, and more. Occasionally we offer SAT/ACT Math Test Prep from our perfect scorer so please message us if you are interested.

Our amazing instructors include:
