includedClass Experience
We will be exploring the cuisine of four countries: China, France, Germany, and Japan. The students along with their teacher will be shown step by step instructions on how to prepare the recipes. The recipes will be placed in the classroom about one week before class and will have flexible ingredients. This class will teach the basics of cooking. For China, we will prepare fried rice. Students will learn how to properly cook rice with flexible suggested ingredients. The lesson will start with safety in the kitchen along with what mise en place means, as I will expect them to assemble the ingredients before each lesson. For France, we will be making Crepes. They will need a nonstick pan. They will be able to top their crepes with a variety of suggested toppings. I was also a French teacher, so I will teach basic language as we cook. When we visit Germany we will be making pretzels. This is a fun activity for students as they will get to roll the dough. In Japan, we will be making savory Japanese pancakes. These pancakes are delicious and very different from our cuisine. Along with cooking, we will be learning about the cultures of these countries as I have lived in France and visited many countries.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their knowledge of food preparation and learn about the cuisine of the four countries. The dishes prepared will be suitable for their family's meals. They will learn food safety, how to properly measure ingredients and learn about these cultures.
We will teach safety in the kitchen. For younger children, food may be chopped in advance with parental supervision.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
I need to know food allergies. All recipes can be altered to suit different diets. Let me know in advance how I need to change the recipe. Also since we use stoves, knives and other potentially dangerous equipment, please provide your child with the amount of assistance that is appropriate to their maturity level. I am many miles away from some of you, so your help is deeply appreciated in making this class a great learning experience for your child.
Supply List
Recipes will be sent in advance of the class. For week one parents will need to provide rice, a rice cooker if you have one or pan to cook rice in. They can have a protein option like bacon, ham, seafood, ham, ground beef, and egg. Vegetables could be onions, peas, carrots, broccoli. Soy sauce and some type of oil is needed. Sesame oil is optional. This recipe is flexible and they can use a variety of ingredients with success.
