Outschool learners will have the unique opportunity to hear from Hedy Bohm, a Holocaust survivor now living in Toronto, Canada. Her presentation will last for about an hour followed by questions from learners.

Hedy was born in Oradea, Transylvania in 1928. In 1940, Northern Transylvania became part of Hungary. The German Army entered Hungary in March of 1944 at which point Jews were herded into Ghettos. In April of 1944, her family was sent to the Oradea ghetto prior to being deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, one of the most infamous concentration and execution camps.
Later that year Hedy was sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau with her parents where they were separated.

After several months at Auschwitz-Birkenau, Hedy and her cousin Eva were sent to work in a factory in Germany where she worked making munitions. Hedy and Eva were liberated by American troops in April of 1945.

Hedy began speaking about her experiences after her husband Imre died in 1992. She believes it is important to do so to counter antisemitism and prejudice.

Before and after this class, Hedy asks that parents discuss the geographical, political, and historical context of World War II and Nazi-era politics.

Parental Guidance:
Hedy will discuss her experiences prior to and during World War II. She will discuss how she and her family were treated before and during the war. She was forced to wear the yellow star identifying her as a Jew and was not allowed to attend school. Prior to being sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau, her family spent time in the ghetto. Some of the topics covered will also include transport to the camp on a cattle car, forced labor, and her experience at Auschwitz. Hedy and her parents were sent to Auschwitz and she was separated from her parents there. She never saw either of them again. She was 16 at the time. She will mention the “food” they were served, the work she did, and the violence and horrors she saw there before liberation.

Reminder:
Unlike your Outschool classes, this will be a large-scale event with up to 300 learners, so be sure to arrive on time and with your cameras on in order to attend this class. Don't have a camera or don't want to be on video? No problem.
