Could your Spanish-language learner who is able to make simple conversation in the language benefit from chatting with peers about topics that interest them? This class is the spot, especially if they need grammar practice at the same time. While learners in this class need to have enough Spanish to converse, they do not have to be consistently using correct grammar nor reading yet. Our class time will have two parts. First, we will focus on discussing topics of interest to the learners in Spanish (about fifteen minutes). Some learners may need more help than others finding the words they need, and that is okay! We may talk about food, animals, games, etc. Learners are also welcome to bring items to class to show us and tell us about. I will work to give each learner opportunities to contribute to the conversation, encourage the conversation to stay in the target language, and give language support as needed, but will generally avoid giving corrections in this part of class as long as we can understand each other. I will set the example of conversing in the target language and will limit the English I use to when it seems really necessary. In the second part of the class time, we will practice grammar (about ten minutes), such as subject/verb agreement and article/noun agreement. The focus will depend on what I sense the learners could use work on based on their conversation. We will generally keep the grammar very practical, working to supply a correct verb conjugation or article given a context, rather than using much grammar jargon at these ages. In this section of the class, I will use Spanish when possible, but may also use English if I feel it is needed for clarification. Since the conversation part of class is dependent on the learners' interests and the grammar work is dependent on their needs, there are no weekly topics to list.
