This class is a great class to take after the Solfege Singing and Basics class! When students study music, they not only learn to sing songs but also the musicality that goes into them. As students learn songs to sing and move to, they will not only learn about the lyrics, but will also gain an understanding of the solfege-melody- that goes into the songs. In this class, we will learn songs and the melodic elements within the Pentatonic Scale. Day 1: Pentatonic Sclae -Students will learn about the pentatonic scale and identifying Do, Re, Mi, Sol, and La on a staff. -Students will complete an activity that helps to label these notes on the staff. -Students will learn the song "Great Big House in New Orleans" and "Lil' Liza Jane." Day 2: Adding in High Do -Students will learn about the pentatonic scale and identifying Mi and Sol on a staff. -Students will complete an activity that helps to label Mi and Sol on the staff. -Students will create (compose) a simple melody using Mi and Sol to share with the group. -Students will review the song "Closet Key" -Students will learn the song "Bickle Bockle" Day 3: Let's Sing More! -Students will learn more about the pentatonic scale and identify all the notes on the scale. -Students will learn the song "I am a Fine Musician" that work with the notes within the pentatonic scale. -Students will complete an activity that helps to label all notes on the pentatonic staff. Day 4: The Pentatonic Scale -Students will learn more about the pentatonic scale and identify all the notes on the scale. -Students will learn the song "Jenny Jenkins" and review all of our songs! -Students will complete an activity that helps to label all notes on the pentatonic staff. -Students will create (compose) a simple melody using the pentatonic scale to share with the group.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of the Pentatonic Scale, including identifying, singing, and composing music using the Pentatonic Scale.

N/A, although students may encourage parents to sing and participate in songs after the class session.
Supply List
A printer to print the activity sheets (or access to a pdf editor online), colored markers (red, orange, yellow, blue, purple), and a writing utensil.
