Class Experience

During this class students will build on the knowledge and skills that they gained in Basics of Self Defense. We will discuss various topics including the flight, fight and freeze response. The techniques are more advanced and include escaping pins, avoiding blows, kicks from the ground and various ground techniques.

Students MUST have taken Basics to Self Defense as this course builds on those techniques.

Each Lesson will consist of a worksheet, short lecture and techniques. The worksheets are designed to help the student think about the topic for that lesson. Students will then post their answers in the classroom. The short lectures explains important topics related to self defense that need to be considered before using a physical defense i.e. verbal responses. Each technique is shown and broken down so that students are able to practice.

Questions include warning signs before an attack and case studies of which self defense techniques were used. This shows that the students understand the variety of self defense.

Throughout the course discussions will take place in the classroom. The teacher will post questions for thought and to problem solve as a class through them. These questions may include what would you say in a certain situation

As well each student can post videos of themselves utilizing/practicing the techniques. We will evaluate these as a class to ensure success with each technique; ways to improve and ways that it worked.

An I Survived video clip will be used to get the students thinking and discussing as a group how the survivor was able to use self defense.

Student Interaction includes:
- discussion questions in the classroom
- scenario discussions
- recordings of technique practices by each student
- team building through assessing each other's techniques
- case study of a youtube clip

Parental Guidance
When discussing why self-defense may be used there may be sensitive topics that come up (e.g. if a student shares a story about being bullied or news report relevant to the topic that the class wants to discuss). Self-defense is typically used to escape from a predator therefore the information will reflect these types of scenarios; however I do try to ensure that any stories or information that is given is always kept within the classroom and all students are treated with respect. Please be aware that there are always risk of injuries whenever there is physical activity required. To avoid injury students need to warm-up and stretch and ensure that they are doing the techniques correctly the way the teacher shows.
Pre-Requisites
Students must have taken the introduction to Self-Defense class.
Supply List
All worksheets will be posted on the classroom page. A safe open area is essential to practice the techniques.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a competitive kickboxer and fitness coach; where self-defense is one of the skills that I teach. I have been coaching kickboxing for 5 years and during that time ran self-defense seminars.
As a mother I want to know that my children will be able to protect themselves if something was to happen and to learn how to fight back.
