In this four-week class, students will expand their knowledge and understanding of playing the saxophone, as they begin Essential Elements Book 2.

Prior experience is required. Students need to have played the saxophone for a minimum of 6 months and/or completed the Essential Elements Book 1. Beginning in the Essential Elements Book 2, we will begin average 2 pages per lesson and there will be required homework each class. I will begin each lesson with review of what was taught the previous week and expect students to demonstrate an understanding of the assigned and practiced exercise(s). Students will then be introduced to the new concept (i.e. notes, timing, theory) as I will demonstrate, and then allow the students to sight read through the exercises for that day's lesson giving tips and helping as necessary. At the end of the lesson, students will be instructed upon what to practice for the coming week in preparation for the next lesson.
Learning Goals
Week 1- page 2, 3 review notes, dotted half and dotted quarter notes, as well as dotted eighth notes, dynamics and first/second endings. Homework: exercise #7 and #9
Week 2- warm up #7 together, then #9 as individuals. Page 4 & 5 introduce multiple measure rest, staccato, and tenuto. Practice exercises #17 & 19
Week 3- warm up #17 together, then #19 as individuals. Page 6 & 7 introduce ritardando, new note high B and key changes. Practice exercises #29 and sight read #31.
Week 4- warm up #29 together, then #31 as individuals. Pages 8 & 9 introduce cut time, syncopation. Review dynamics. Homework: #42 and 43
