Intermediate Level
This course is for students who can speak in front of others but would like to improve their public speaking skills and learn a more professional form of public speaking. In this course, students will practice creating an engaging speech that captures the audience's interest and feels relatable. Students will research a topic of their choice and learn how to put the things they learn into a thorough and intelligent speech. Students will give these speeches during week 5 of class. In each class, students will be expected to speak in front of each other. I will assign a reading each week for students to practice a bit at home and perform in front of their classmates during class time. During these readings, we will practice pacing, volume, enunciation, and intonation. Class will begin with a greeting and introduction to the day's topic. I will lecture for a portion of the class, and then students will speak. There will be time for questions during class, and students will have a small assignment to complete between each class. Week 1: Planning- topic selection, best websites and sources for information, speech construction Week 2: Preparing- relating material to audience, using notes, choosing essential information Week 3: Practicing- putting the information together, practicing out loud, calming strategies Week 4: Performing- pauses, intonation, body movements, eye contact, energy Week 5: Students speeches!
