5 in-class hoursHomework
1-2 hours per week. I assign "drawing studies" which may take approx 30 minutes weekly.Assessment
Rather than assessment, I work to enable my young learners to get better at self-critiquing. Find the problem areas, celebrate the successful areas, and keep making progress! I discuss the emotional aspects of positive or negative self-talk and help set realistic expectations.Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 7
Intermediate Level
WHAT WILL BE TAUGHT: In this pencil art class, many fundamentals are introduced and reviewed week to week, including: • Image transfer techniques to help with basic composition setting • Shading and using light and shadow to create the illusion of volume and realistic dimension • Mark making, contouring and textures • Instruction for properly applying graphite and using other art supplies like blending stumps, tortillions, precision erasers, etc. MY EXPERIENCE & TEACHING STYLE: My approach to teaching this type of drawing places great emphasis on shading and surface textures. Students will need to be able to use a computer printer, as we will use grid and transfer techniques in our preliminary phases of drawings. INTERACTION: There will be opportunities to share work between group members and discuss their works in progress. I sometimes teach my learners through the use of my own pre-recorded video tutorials PRE-REQUISITE: There are no specific class pre-requisites. It is very helpful if learners bring in a few pieces of their "best" drawings to show me so that I may evaluate where they are beginning from. There is work to be done outside of classroom time.
Learning Goals
The objective for each learner, quite simply, is to strengthen fundamental shading and textural drawing skills. Our primary goals are to master pencil techniques, honing our skills of mark-making and shading.

A professional artist and designer since 1990, my first creative ventures included being a sign-painter, muralist and caricature artist. I have taught art, design and illustration as adjunct faculty at the college level as well as K-Grade 8 at a Private Academy. I've been instructing Grades 4-12 here on Outschool since March of 2020.
My studio, Rockin’ Chalk, specializes in Food and Beverage art. I’ve created for thousands of customers and have been commissioned to create artwork for well known food, beverage and retail brands such as Torani, Yerbae, Weber Grill and Cavender’s, along with many smaller, independently owned restaurants.
MY WORLD
I am a married mother of 2 amazing boys and I live with my family on a lake in Southern New Hampshire. A few creative people who have inspired me in my lifetime include Jim Henson, Tim Burton and John Lasseter. I love classic rock music and have a serious weakness for tacos.
