Description

Class Experience

By the end of our session, students will have a new or improved knowledge of different types of dance steps used in traditional musical theater choreography, as well as how to piece together different portions of a combination. They might also learn a new song!
As a professional musical theatre performer, I have had the pleasure of using my dance training to explore how we tell stories in musical theatre with our bodies. I believe that using our shared language of dance and applying character to the songs we learn is a great way to both keep kids active and discover new ways to be creative. This particular class is exciting because we will explore specific styles of movement, and might even look at its history and learn where the style came from before it was used in a modern musical. I'm so eager to bring this particular camp option to students as it keeps our more intermediate students sharp during these difficult times, and offers an opportunity to develop relationships with students from all over the world over almost two months. They also get to perform Broadway style combinations in their own living rooms!
Students should be in a space where they have room to move, preferably on a solid floor (carpet is not advisable, but perfectly acceptable!). Students should also wear athletic clothing that allows them to move easily, and wear jazz or ballet shoes, workout socks, or come barefoot for their safety. Please also have water some type of liquid nearby to stay hydrated throughout class!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Some of the shows that we will explore have songs that feature suggestive language and/or profanity. We will avoid these songs in class or use a clean version, but if students chose to listen to the soundtracks outside of class please be aware!
