Class Experience

Beginner - Intermediate Level
Learners will improve their individual instrumental playing skill and build their range and abilities in a variety of ways while working together with other instrumentalists. They will learn engaging pieces that will fit their ability and will have the opportunity to work with others in the ensemble on duets and trios. As we progress, we will begin learning 3 Intermediate Level Pieces that will be performed individually and recorded, then sent to me and edited into their final performance.
As a band director for ten years, teaching in the public school setting as well as teaching individual private lessons, I have gained a varied skill set and a love of all things music and band. I graduated in 2000 from the University of North Texas and have had many years of professional development and practice as both an assistant band director and head band director in the public school setting. I have since left teaching to pursue teaching as a homeschool educator of my own children. As a YouTube content creator, I have learned how to create and edit videos including adjusting sound quality. These two passions are combining to serve the online learning community by providing a safe way for students to learn music as a fine art and to be able to have the shared experience of performance. Music has been my passion since I was a child and I knew by age 12 that I would teach music. I love to share the fine arts with everyone and look forward to an amazing community experience.
Learners are expected to practice at least 30 minutes a day/ 5 days per week on all music and skills covered in each class. Learners must set up their practice area to sit in a chair with feet flat on the floor with a music stand so they can work on their posture, hand position and breathing techniques.
Learners will need to have their own instrument prior to the first day of class. Please ensure they have a quality intermediate level instrument. Instruments purchased from a big box store or from Amazon are difficult to find parts for and repair personnel who will repair them when broken as they have different parts than those bought from a reputable music store.

In addition, learners will need to have the following:
Essential Elements Book 2 for their instrument (with EEi) - you can find the book for your instrument on Amazon.com. If you need assistance in finding the correct book, please send me a message.
8notes.com subscription
Tuner/Metronome Combo (affiliate link) https://amzn.to/2Z5YAZo
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learners will be assessed informally through individual performance during class, scale drills and in our final virtual concert performance. Each class we will continue to evaluate fundamental skills such and posture, breathing, hand position, tone production, control, dynamics, correct notes and correct rhythms.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Learners will be preparing music for a virtual concert that will be recorded by each individual player and will be uploaded to YouTube. We will be sending out the link and will premiere the concert together as a class with family and friends once the final product is edited.
We will be using Essential Elements Book 2 as our primary source. Each learner will need to purchase a copy. Subscription to 8notes.com will be used for any performance pieces we use in class.

I have always been a teacher and explorer and received my bachelor's degree in music education in 2000. Teaching in the public school system as an accomplished band director for nearly a decade was rewarding; however, I wanted more for myself and...
