Class Experience

In this course, students will learn how to work with clients, working with a budget, and how to build a strong portfolio. Please note this class is intended to be the highest level out of all of my courses offered on interior design. While it is not required students take the other levels first, it is strongly encouraged. Taking this class without taking the others first might be difficult.

My class will be structured by going over Power Points I have prepared in advance. Since this is an advanced course, there will be a lot of interaction with myself and the other students. If there is time after every lecture, students will also have the chance to share their homework with the class- this will give everyone the chance to hear feedback from everyone and learn and grow.

My teaching style is to be encouraging and positive. I believe interior design is an art just like drawing or painting, everyone will have different views and opinions on what looks "better" or "good," and that is totally okay! I welcome different opinions and views in this class. My teaching style is designed to offer feedback, but encourage students to ultimately be the own judge of their work. Being proud of your own work is the most important thing.

Class One: Working with Clients. Students will learn valuable tips and ideas on how to work with clients. The homework assignment for this class will be to design a room for another student! Students will interact with each other via the live meetings and the classroom in order to do this.

Class Two: Working with a Budget: Students will learn tips on how to work with a budget in regards to interior design projects. The homework assignment for this class will be to present a Power Point/presentation board with their plan for the space they are assigned along with their budget breakdown.

Class Three: Portfolios. Students will learn tips and ideas on how to craft a strong portfolio. The homework assignment for this class will be to design a portfolio with all of their designs.

Class Four: This class will be dedicated to going over everyone's homework assignments and portfolios. Students will receive feedback from myself and the other students in a nice way (I love compliment sandwiches) in order to inspire them to keep on improving in their interior design careers!

Students will need prior knowledge in order to take this course. Students should be familiar with interior design styles (industrial, coastal, bohemian, minimal, modern, traditional, glam, etc.) Students should also be familiar with balance, lighting, and other concepts taught in my first few courses in order for them to get the most out of this course.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Alexis Bigelow. My professional background involves being a recent graduate from UNC Chapel Hill with a BA in Dramatic Arts.

I am passionate about the arts, Harry Potter (I am a Hufflepuff!), Star Wars, anime (I LOVE Naruto), and video games! It is my goal to create fun and educational classes on these subjects.

When it comes to teaching, I have a couple core values I strongly believe in. I believe there is no such thing as a, "stupid question." Too often children are afraid to ask questions in class because there is a lack of encouragement on the administrative side. My goal is to promote a healthy, happy, and encouraging environment that makes children excited to learn. This brings me to my second core value- it is more important to learn and to apply oneself than to worry about a grade. Learning should be fun and something a student genuinely looks forward to. With this in mind, I will certainly provide feedback for assignments/class activities/etc; but the feedback will be based on the idea to improve knowledge and applying oneself versus a grade. It is truly my hope that my students will be excited about learning!

A few fun facts about me include: 1) I have recently started a Princess Peach items collection! 2) I am left handed. 3) The first thing I ever sewed was a pair of Harry Potter pajama shorts!
