Class Experience

"I sure am grateful for the person who figured out Turkeys are comestible!"

In this one time class, students will learn expand their vocabulary with words associated with the Thanksgiving holiday and giving season in a fun, interactive, discussion-filled format.

Students will learn the spelling and pronunciation of the word, the part of speech, the definition and will hear several examples of the word used in context.

The words will be introduced in context and students will be challenged to use their context clues and inference skills to determine the meaning of the word on their own. I will define the word and go over examples and give some fun, modern Thanksgiving facts related to each word. For example, how many Turkeys are consumed on Thanksgiving Day!

Students will submit a mini project to demonstrate their understanding of at least one of the words. They can choose from one of the following:

- Write a poem or song
- Create a Google Slides presentation
- Write a short story or comic strip
- Record a 1 minute video "teaching" someone about the word using examples.

My name is Mrs. Kayla! Reading is my jam but I also offer classes about the outdoors, national and state parks, gardening and running! I I truly believe in the power of self-discovery and guiding students to come to their own conclusions. My favorite part of teaching is watching a child's face when they make connections and have "AHA" moments followed by self pride. It truly makes my teacher heart soar! I have worked with a wide variety of students of different abilities, populations and ages. I started my career working with kids with autism, then became a drug prevention educator in 1st - 12th grade. Most recently, I am a certified 5th grade reading/social studies teacher at a STEM academy.
People label me as outdoorsy and I'm here for it! I'm an avid gardener and I love to hike and camp with my family! My favorite national park is Big Bend.
I cannot wait to share my love for learning, reading and the outdoors with all of your learners and explorers!
