New York Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello! I'm Karen McGougain Diaz, but my students know me as Teacher K. With over a decade of experience as a special education itinerant teacher in New York City, I’ve had the privilege of working across diverse classroom environments, including collaborative team teaching, self-contained classrooms, and integrated settings. I’ve taught students aged three to fifteen, focusing on all developmental domains—gross and fine motor skills, cognitive growth, and social-emotional development.
I hold a dual degree in Childhood General Education and Special Education, along with twelve graduate credits toward a master’s in Literacy. In January 2021, I earned my professional New York State teaching certificate, affirming my commitment to excellence in education.
Currently, I serve as an elementary tutor specializing in reading, writing, and math for Varsity Tutors, and I also work as an early intervention specialist. My tutoring experience spans 18 years, during which I have supported students from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade with organizations like Champion Learning, Sylvan Learning Center, and Varsity Tutors. Additionally, I teach creative writing at various summer camps and programs throughout NYC, nurturing young writers' creativity.
My teaching philosophy centers on the belief that we must educate the child, not just the curriculum. I adopt a child-centered approach, engaging students actively in their learning processes. I firmly believe that every child has the potential to learn, and I strive to foster this through positive reinforcement and encouragement, tailoring lessons to their interests and strengths.
On a personal note, I have a passion for music and enjoy playing the alto saxophone. Numbers and math excite me, and I love creating and making things, anything art related. I love to sing and ride bikes. These interests often enrich my lessons, making learning fun and relatable for my students.
