Interactive Study Skills Class to Improve Learning

This interactive 8-week study skills course will teach fun and easy ways to learn better and remember what you are learning. We will explore how to study for tests; take notes; and learn new strategies for time management and organization.

Homework
1 hour per week. Students should practice new study skills for at least half an hour between classes. Students will writing in a study skills journal every day. Students should practice for one hour before the last class. Student will have the opportunity to share a mini-lesson on a study skill to share with the class.
Assessment
Students will be assessed with a written narrative at the end of the class.

Class Experience

Would you like to improve your grades? Are you wanting to learn new things effectively? Would you like to remember more and get better grades on tests?  Use active recall to help you ace your classes. This is an interactive class will support your student to reaching his or her goals in whatever subject they are studying. We will explore learning styles and who you are as a learner.  This study skills course will teach fun and easy ways to learn better and remember what you are learning. We will explore how to study for tests, take notes, and learn new strategies for time management and organization.

Research-based strategies will be taught in this class. Students will learn how to study smart, to improve their learn more effectively. Learners will learn and practice skills to develop growth mindset. Research shows that grit is a better predictor of success than IQ or other measures when it comes to achievements as varied as getting better grades or winning a soccer match.

Week #1: Learn how to take notes in your classes. Discuss what research-based note-taking strategy works best for you. 
Week #2: How to study your notes after class and make flash cards. How to recognize procrastination and start making the most of your study time.
Week #3: Goal setting and making schedules and calendars. 
Week #4: Positive self-talk and growth mindset. Visualize and shape your inner self-talk.
Week #5: Find your strengths and learning style. Who are you as a learner?
Week #6: Time management and organizing skills for improved learning.
Week #7: Learn how to study for tests. Discussion will cover how to balances studies with healthy eating, sleeping and exercise.
Week #8: Putting it all together; reflecting on what works for you.  Summarize and teach your favorite study skill to the group.

Students will have time to set goals and reflect on what they are learning. Student have choice to practice what strategies work best for them.

•	Share your favorite learning strategy with a classmate.
•	Make weekly and monthly calendars and to-do lists.
