Description

Class Experience

The learner will:
1. Learn about six different writing genres that can be used to express themselves through written and spoken word
2. Create six different writing pieces with a final draft.
3. Get to know each other and work in groups.
4. Maximize their writing time and discover the quality of their work during class.
This intense writing course is being offered because I love writing and found my passion for writing at a very early age. I am a successful children's author and freelance writer. I have published several informational pieces, nonfiction, and realistic fiction books. My personal experience makes this a unique offering because I have been writing for years and would like to share with students why writing is important and how it can be fun, freeing and helpful.
Students will be asked to create the final drafts for the work they do in class. They will be given about 30 minutes to work on each writing piece. Anything not completed during that time becomes homework, plus a final draft will be expected upon the next meeting day. This work will probably take about an hour to complete depending on whether students commenced by hand or using a computer.
Students will need to have paper, pencil, coloring utensils, electronic device if possible. A ready and open mind. A listening spirit. They may also feel free to bring a snack or a drink as there will be a lot of silent writing time.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The final drafts and the dedication and focus during class will be the assessment I use. I keep track of all of students progress. A parent only needs to request the info and I can set up a time to meet with each parent to discuss progress and results.
2 hours per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Students will be learning about six different genres as discussed above. Some of their writing can be revelatory as students are growing and maturing into adults. Any alarming pieces will be analyzed and considered for open conversation with parents if need be.
