Public speaking is necessary in all walks of life, yet many people cite it as their number one fear. The reason most people are fearful of talking in groups is 1) they lack the confidence that comes with practice and 2) they lack a knowledge of the fundamentals of HOW to talk to groups of people. As a lawyer and seminar speaker for over 25 years, I have the experience to teach your learner how to not only be an effective communicator in group settings but also how to enjoy it! During our first meeting we will do some warmup and improv games so that I can get an idea of your learner's strengths and where they need to improve; we will then work on the one skill that will most improve their confidence for the rest of the class. Among the common skills that learners choose to focus on are speaking smoothly (with no awkward silences), controlling their hands, making eye contact, being able to quickly organize key points in their head, constructing an effective opening statement and/or memorable conclusion, and keeping their voice steady. During the course of the lesson we will work on speaking following a prompt, improv, and making and countering arguments. Depending on the goals of the student (mock trial? debate? presentations?) we will focus on material designated to help the learner achieve their oratory goals.
Learning Goals
Students will be exposed to different types of public speaking, including debate, impromptu speaking, and responding to a prompt. My goal is to make sure that students gain confidence in their ability to share their voice with others and to powerfully communicate their thoughts and knowledge with others. Each lesson will focus on the thing that will most quickly improve the learner's effectiveness.
