Welcome to class! In this intensive 4 week writing course, I will teach and we will explore six different genres of writing. Our genres will be descriptive, expository, persuasive, narrative, technical and poetic. The topics I will cover will include how to plan and organize each writing genre, we will define and see examples of the genres, and then we will spend about 50% of the class time, working on the assignment. Students will be expected to hand in a final draft by the next meeting...
The learner will: 1. Learn about six different writing genres that can be used to express themselves through written and spoken word 2. Create six different writing pieces with a final draft. 3. Get to know each other and work in groups. 4. Maximize their writing time and discover the quality of their work during class.
This intense writing course is being offered because I love writing and found my passion for writing at a very early age. I am a successful children's author and freelance writer. I have published several informational pieces, nonfiction, and realistic fiction books. My personal experience makes this a unique offering because I have been writing for years and would like to share with students why writing is important and how it can be fun, freeing and helpful.
Because this is a flex class, in class work can easily turn into homework. Homework and class work will be labeled but both are done at your own pace and should be handed in within 3 hours of the class assignments.
Students will need to have paper, pencil, coloring utensils, electronic device if possible. A ready and open mind. A listening spirit.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will be looking at all the assignments and homework. I will use an informal method-feedback based. I will keep a record of the work students do in case parents want to know if work is being completed in a timely manner. All students are expected to complete all their work in a timely fashion.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Students will be learning about six different genres as discussed above. Some of their writing can be revelatory as students are growing and maturing into adults. Any alarming pieces will be analyzed and considered for open conversation with parents if need be.
