US Grade 4 - 7
In this four week class, students will learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide positive and negative integers. They will be given rules to follow to help them learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers. Each week the students will focus on a different type of operation: Week 1- Adding Integers, Week 2- Subtracting Integers, Week 3- Multiplying and Dividing Integers, and Week 4- Review All Operations. Week 1: Adding Integers- The first week of class will be broken into introduction, teacher instruction, guided practice, and individual practice. For introduction, the teacher and students will introduce themselves to each other. The teacher will also use this time to gauge what prior knowledge the students have about the topic. For teacher instruction, the teacher will define what an integer is and give examples of positive and negative numbers. She will also show the students how they appear on a number line. The teacher, will then give the students the rules for adding integers. The students will be asked to write the rule down in their notes. For guided practice, the teacher will walk the students through how to solve a problem step by step, checking the students' work as they go. The teacher and students will do a few together before the students attempt to do a few on their own for individual practice. The teacher will check the students work to see that they are solving each problem correctly. At the end of class, the students will play the game "Integers Rule Race" where the students must follow the adding integer rules to solve the problem as fast as possible to earn points. Week 2: Subtracting Integers- The second week of class will include review, teacher instruction, guided practice, and individual practice. For review, the teacher will review the adding integer rule with the students and give them some sample problems to solve. The teacher will check that the students are accurately solving the adding integer problems. For teacher instruction, the teacher will give them students the rule for subtracting integers. At the end of class, the students will play the game "Integers Rule Race" where the students must follow the subtracting integer rules to solve the problem as fast as possible to earn points. Week 3: Multiplying and Dividing Integers-The third week of class will include review, teacher instruction, guided practice, and individual practice. For review, the teacher will review the adding and subtracting integer rule with the students and give them some sample problems to solve. The teacher will check that the students are accurately solving the integer problems. For teacher instruction, the teacher will give them students the rule for multiplying and dividing integers. At the end of class, the students will play the game "Integers Rule Race" where the students must follow the multiplying and dividing integer rules to solve the problem as fast as possible to earn points. Week 4: Review All Operations- The last week of class will include review and individual practice. The class will begin with reviewing all the rules for each operation. Students will be given a mix of integer problems to practice adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers. The teacher will check the students work to make sure they are doing it correctly. For individual practice, the students will play the game "Integers Rule Race" where the students must follow the adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integer rules to solve the problem as fast as possible to earn points. If students are the fastest to solve the problem they must explain how they solved it too. I taught sixth grade math for four years. I am passionate about helping students learn new math skills while making it fun an engaging. As a teacher, I make sure to create standard-based lessons that help students to learn the curriculum while making it fun to learn!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Olivia Schuster and I am so excited to get to teach you! I taught at a private school for five years: one year in second grade and four years in sixth grade. While teaching sixth grade, I helped pilot and implement a new Common Core curriculum, as well as introduce, teach, and lead the Science Fair for the entire sixth grade. I also created science labs and math activities to help enhance curriculum and meet the standards. I also taught English to Chinese student online for a little over a year, so I am very familiar with teaching students through an video chat format.
Due to a recent move, I am now a stay-at-home mom to my two wonderful daughters, age 3 and age 1. Instead of being just a stay-at-home mom, I like to call myself a stay-at-home teacher. I love teaching and am excited to teach students (other than my own kids) again!
My desire as a teacher is to create a learning environment where students can learn through their own discovery. Through engaging and creative standard based lesson plans I want to instill in my students a passion for learning. My expertise and experience enables me to reach each student at their own level and promote the idea of being a life-long learner while having fun. I am excited to meet you and to teach you very soon!
