What's included
4 live meetings
3 hrs 20 mins in-class hoursHomework
1-2 hours per week. Each lesson will be accompanied by a corresponding work packet for students. It is recommended that students print out the packet before coming to class. The packet serves as a tool for completing weekly learning assignments. Students have the option to submit their completed assignments through the Outschool platform in the "Teacher" tab for feedback.Assessment
Students are welcome and encouraged to turn in their papers for feedback. IEW utilized a checklist method for clearly communicating what is expected for each paper. Students will be encouraged to follow the checklist. I will review papers and provide positive constructive feedback but will not award letter or percentage grades. The focus of the class is writing and the writing structure and style. I will not correct spelling and in-depth punctuation. Basic quality spelling and punctuation usage are expected but perfection is not required.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
Intermediate Level
Calling all students whether you like creative writing or not. In this class, you will learn how to craft and create content for a narrative. We will build on the skills taught in Units 1 & 2 and 4. (My class on Units 1 & 2, 3 and 4 is not a prerequisite but is EXTREMELY helpful and highly recommended. I will briefly cover the foundational elements of Outlining on the first day) Each session we will complete a sample as a class - if students wish to complete an assignment on their own from the lesson that is optional. Session 1 - We will observe a picture. Using questions we will come up with a variety of options and details from which to write a paragraph. We will practice writing a topic sentence but stating the central fact. The principle of a solid clincher and title will also be taught. Session 2 - Students will work with two pictures to discuss and write what happens before, after, and outside of the picture. We will learn about the Past Perfect Tense (the Past of the Past) and utilize this technique for even more options for our narrative. Session 3 -Again 1 picture will be presented to the students for observation. Once again topics and clinchers will be reinforced. Students will crft 3 paragraphs coming up with Before and After scenarios for paragraphs 1 & 3. Finally, we will discuss adding 2-3 elements of style such as Alliteration, Similies, Metaphors, and 3 Short Staccos Sentences to their paragraphs. Session 4 - Student will pick their own pictures to write from (1 to 3). We will discuss editing. Marking papers the IEW way and using a master IEW style checklist. This Rubric helps students keep track of all the structure and style elements they are including in their writing.
Learning Goals
By the end of this 4 session class students will have creative 4 short fun fact-finding narratives. They will have learned how to ask themselves quality questions in order to "invent" content for creative writing.
Other Details
Learning Needs
I teach in a systematic step by step format designed to help the most reluctant learner achieve success. I have worked with many students with unique learning needs and my goal is to provide a class that can be adapted as needed.
Parental Guidance
All content is age-appropriate and hopefully below reading level so the focus can be on writing not difficult content.
Pre-Requisites
IEW Units 1 & 2, 3 and 4 lay the foundation for the IEW Method of Outlining and is HIGHLY recommended prior to this class. Students should be able to read at a 3rd-grade level.
Supply List
With each lesson, there will be a posted work packet. It is highly encouraged that students print this packet and use it to complete the lessons. Turning in paper for feedback requires the use of a camera phone or scanner to upload the document to Outschool if the student does not use google docs

I'm a dedicated educator with over a decade of experience teaching IEW. My passion is to make writing engaging and enjoyable for my students, and I strive to bring creativity and interactivity to every lesson.
As a parent of three children, I've had the opportunity to use the IEW program at home and have walked my own kids through the program. This personal experience has given me a unique perspective and deep understanding of the challenges that students and families may face in the writing process.
In my classes, I aim to create a supportive and dynamic learning environment that encourages students to take risks and develop their own unique voices as writers. I believe that with the right guidance and support, every student has the potential to become a skilled and confident writer.
Whether in the classroom or at home, I'm dedicated to making writing a positive and rewarding experience for all students, and I'm excited to share my knowledge and passion with you.
