What's included

4 live meetings
3 hrs 20 mins in-class hours
Homework
2-4 hours per week. Each lesson will be accompanied by a corresponding work packet for students. It is recommended that students print out the packet before coming to class. The packet serves as a tool for completing weekly learning assignments. Assignments for Lessons 1 and 2 are expected to take approximately 10-30 minutes each, while assignments for Lessons 3 and 4 may require 20-60 minutes each. Students have the option to submit their completed assignments through the Outschool platform in the "Teacher" tab for feedback.
Assessment
I'm delighted to review outlines and papers, offering positive feedback. My focus is on assessing whether students are following the process presented in class. It's important to note that I do not correct spelling and grammar. To receive feedback, assignments must be submitted on the Outschool platform under the "Teacher" tab.

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner Level
In this comprehensive class, students will take the next step beyond notemaking and outlining, which are the cornerstone of all IEW writing units. Through the "I do, we do, you do" teaching methodology, the instructor will introduce new material, model it for the students, and engage in reinforcement activities together.

Students will learn how to work with longer, more complex texts and master the art of "putting things into their own words" to avoid plagiarism. This class will specifically cover Unit 4 of IEW, focusing on summarizing a reference from one source. Building on the skills taught in Units 1 & 2, students will gain proficiency in summarizing while strengthening their understanding of the writing process.

While a prerequisite for Units 1 & 2 is not required, it is highly recommended as it provides valuable foundational knowledge. For those who haven't taken Units 1 & 2, the instructor will briefly cover the foundational elements of outlining on the first day to ensure all students are on the same page.

Join us for an enriching learning experience that will enhance your writing skills and prepare you for effective summarizing in your academic pursuits across any subject.
Learning Goals
By the end of these 4 session, students will have written 4 papers/paragraphs. They will understand how to make an outline from a larger text, selecting important and interesting facts, and write it into a paragraph. Students will understand the importance of a clear topic and clincher sentences in a paragraph. They will have learned several "dress-ups" and style techniques.

Learning Needs
I teach in a systematic step by step format designed to help the most reluctant learner achieve success. I have worked with many students with unique learning needs and my goal is to provide a class that can be adapted as needed.
Parental Guidance
All content is age-appropriate and hopefully below reading level so the focus can be on writing not difficult content.
Pre-Requisites
IEW Unit 1 & 2 lays the foundation for the IEW Method of Outlining and is HIGHLY recommended prior to this class. Additionally, Unit 3 teaches several elements we will reference. Students should be able to read at a 3rd-grade level.

I'm a dedicated educator with over a decade of experience teaching IEW. My passion is to make writing engaging and enjoyable for my students, and I strive to bring creativity and interactivity to every lesson.

As a parent of three children, I've had the opportunity to use the IEW program at home and have walked my own kids through the program. This personal experience has given me a unique perspective and deep understanding of the challenges that students and families may face in the writing process.

In my classes, I aim to create a supportive and dynamic learning environment that encourages students to take risks and develop their own unique voices as writers. I believe that with the right guidance and support, every student has the potential to become a skilled and confident writer.

Whether in the classroom or at home, I'm dedicated to making writing a positive and rewarding experience for all students, and I'm excited to share my knowledge and passion with you.
