The art of tattooing has a very long history and has been practiced since ancient times. But how old is the oldest known tattoo? Why have people been tattooing themselves for centuries, around the world? How do tattoos even work and what different styles of tattoos are there?

In this one-time course, students will learn the history of tattoos and how the practice of tattooing originated. They will be introduced to different styles and learn how tattoos developed throughout history and around the world, up to today. Students will also learn how tattoos physically work and how our bodies react to tattoos over time. At the end of the class, students will have the opportunity to design their own tattoo and share with the class. They will be given time in class to design their tattoo in their own private break out room. Students will also have the opportunity to continue working on their design outside of class to later upload and share into the classroom. 

This class takes the form of a lecture and slide presentation. Students will be asked questions throughout the lesson and will have multiple opportunities to ask questions and discuss with the instructor and each other throughout class. No prior knowledge regarding tattoos is necessary. No prior experience with art is necessary.
