Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Weekly Informative Writing Workshop

In this engaging weekly class, students will learn how to craft clear, well-structured informative writing pieces by breaking the process into manageable, easy-to-follow steps.

Each session focuses on a specific skill—like writing strong topic sentences, using transitions, citing reliable evidence, or crafting effective conclusions—building toward complete and polished writing.

Students will work with visual prompts, graphic organizers, and structured guidance to analyze informational texts, conduct focused research, and organize their ideas logically. Lessons include interactive discussions and activities that keep students actively involved and thinking critically.

Rooted in Common Core literacy standards and supported by Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) practices, this course not only strengthens academic writing skills but also encourages self-awareness, confidence, and a positive writing identity. Small group instruction ensures that each student receives meaningful feedback, support, and encouragement to grow as both a writer and a thinker.

Class Structure:
- Warm-up activity or game to get ideas flowing
- Mini-lesson using slides, examples, or short video clips
- Guided writing/work time with support
- Peer or group discussion to share ideas and get feedback
- Wrap-up reflection and optional extension challenges

Teaching Style:
My approach is upbeat, supportive, and interactive. I break down writing into manageable pieces and provide lots of encouragement and real-time feedback. I use slides, real examples, and occasional video clips to keep lessons engaging and accessible for all learners.

Whether you're a hesitant writer or already love to write, this class will help you grow your skills and confidence in a fun, supportive environment.

Master's Degree in Psychology from Liberty University
Bachelor's Degree in English from San Francisco State University
As a credentialed English teacher with a Master’s in Adolescent Developmental Counseling, I bring a powerful combination of academic instruction and social-emotional support to my writing classes. With over a decade of experience teaching students in grades 6–12, I specialize in guiding young writers through the process of crafting clear, engaging, and well-structured informative texts.

In this course, students will learn how to break down the informative writing process into manageable steps—from analyzing informational texts and conducting focused research to organizing ideas with graphic organizers and writing with clarity and purpose. Each week, we’ll build specific skills such as writing strong topic sentences, using transitions, citing evidence, and crafting conclusions that leave an impact.

My lessons are built around structured prompts, visual supports, and interactive discussions that keep students engaged while deepening their understanding of key academic concepts. I integrate both Common Core literacy standards and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) practices, helping students grow not only as writers, but as reflective thinkers.

With my counseling background, I foster an encouraging learning environment where students feel safe to take creative risks, express their ideas, and develop confidence in their voice. Small group instruction allows me to provide personalized feedback and support, ensuring every learner gets what they need to succeed.

By the end of the course, students will walk away with the tools to write strong, well-organized informative pieces—and with a greater sense of confidence in their ability to communicate, think critically, and grow as learners.
