Group journalism or writing classes are fine, but students also need individual instruction, and this is where I can help. As a longtime newspaper reporter and editor who oversaw college interns on the Washington Times' national desk for 14 years, I understand how students of all ages just need someone to sit beside them and coach them on the finer points. I can help students with leads, story organization and ways to make their articles shine. I can also help students polish articles they hope to submit for contests or publication. For parents: We will work out a beneficial time for us all to work together. I am very flexible on times and dates.
Learning Goals
We will go over lead sentences, spelling, the body of the story, whether the story fits logically together and ways to end it. (For those who wish to know more, I do offer a group class on journalism for upper elementary students, which I recommend for anyone starting out in this genre.) Students will be able to ask me questions about their work and get immediate feedback and advice. I can instruct them on how to change their stories and they can work on it in real time or end the class with clear instructions on how to finish their piece.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am very used to helping students write clear, concise articles after my many years of coaching college students while an assistant national editor at the Washington Times. I have been a staff reporter or editor for 5 newspapers and I've freelanced for some of the top media outlets in the country, including (recently) the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, National Geographic and several others. I have also substituted for three school districts on Seattle's Eastside for students K-12 and taught college journalism courses at four universities or colleges in Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee and Alaska.
