Note: I also run an 'Enrichment, Option A' and 'Enrichment, Option B'. These courses can be studied independently, or in any order! Just choose the course that most interests your learner!

** Please get in touch to discuss your learner’s needs and we can book a suitable time together! **

This 4-week enrichment programme will stretch and engage your academic learner, as they flex their critical thinking muscles and develop their cultural and political awareness. We will explore Shakespeare, analyse and explore famous first lines, find out about the Great Fire of London and build on our debating skills.

I have a Masters and a PGCE (a professional teaching qualification) from the University of Oxford. I am also an experienced debater. These classes are loosely-styled around an Oxford tutorial, and aim to challenge high-level thinkers and gifted and talented students.

Lesson 1: What can we learn from Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre? We will discuss the history of the theatre, and consider its social and cultural implications.

Lesson 2: Famous first lines. We will look at some of the famous first lines in literature (1984, Rebecca, The Go-Between. This class will offer an exciting combination of creative writing activities (“look at the first line of ‘Rebecca’ - can you write the next paragraph?”) and also a mini introduction to some great texts. We will conclude by considering the question - What makes literature ‘great’?

Lesson 3: The Great Fire of London. In this class, we will look at the history of what happened in London in 1666, and consider how it changed the society for ever. We will discuss the social, cultural and economic consequences and consider how London was rebuilt.

Lesson 4: Debating! If students have not previously attended my Enrichment classes, then this will be instruction in the Oxford Union debating style. If students have attended my Enrichment classes before, then we will focus on debating around the question of Henry VIII and his six wives! I will briefly introduce the wives and then we will have either a small number of mini debates, or one more sustained debate depending on student aptitude and interest. (Students will have the opportunity to research this topic before class)
