Class Experience

** Please note that learners do not need to have completed my Enrichment, Option A - they are standalone programmes! Just pick the course you think your learner would enjoy the most! **

** Please get in touch to discuss your learner’s needs and we can book a suitable time together **

This 4-week enrichment programme will stretch and engage your academic learner, as they flex their critical thinking muscles and develop their cultural and political awareness. We will explore Shakespeare, consider the nature of equality, and build on our debating skills.

I have a Masters and a PGCE (a professional teaching qualification) from the University of Oxford. I am also an experienced debater. These classes are loosely-styled around an Oxford tutorial, and aim to challenge high-level thinkers and gifted and talented students.

Lesson 1: What can we learn from Shakespeare's 'Macbeth'?
I will create opportunity for critical thinking: analyse the role of the witches, infer Shakespeare’s message, debate which is more important in the play: ambition or the supernatural? Consider Shakespeare's skill with language.

Lesson 2: Did the suffragettes use fair methods to get their message across?
I will discuss the rise of the women's suffrage movement, and how the group split into peaceful suffragists and militant suffragettes. Learners will use mind maps to make notes and then be encouraged to analyse and debate which was the more successful approach. Learners will present their findings about the women's suffrage movement in their own country (or a country of their choice).

Lesson 3: What is equality?
We will look at what philosophers say about equality - J.S. Mill, Rousseau, Aristotle. And then think about what we mean by this. With lots of scaffolding and short questions, we will discuss the nature of equality in society, and debate the difference between fairness and equality. Together, we will plan and write a mini-essay considering the difference between fairness and equality.

Lesson 4: How do we debate controversial topics?
In this lesson we will host two mini debates so that learners can practise their Oxford Union style debating techniques. (I will give instruction on this!) The topics will be chosen based on learner interest/age etc.

Hi! My name is Susannah and I live in England.

I have a Masters from the University of Oxford, and a lifelong interest in history, literature and language.

--JANUARY 2025 UPDATE - Still offering 1:1 classes - please get in touch --

I am the founder of 'SUSANNAH - TEACHER AND WRITER' private tutoring business. I work with families from all over the world, who are searching for academically rigorous but happy and fun English, reading and writing tuition for their kids.

On Outschool I am pleased to offer 1:1 tuition, and my popular John Locke Essay Competition classes.

I am so grateful for some of the reviews I have received from Outschool parents:

"One of the best classes we have ever joined in Outschool."

"There are some “treasures” on Outschool. The classes of Ms O’Brien are certainly among the best ones."

"Susannah did a great job teaching this class. She kept the kids engaged with activities accessible to different ages and skill levels and created opportunities for everyone to participate multiple times in a fun, pressure free way."

"My son is enjoying this class. He doesn't enjoy English at school but has only good things to say about this teacher and the things he's learning. I am happy that he is becoming more confident with his English skills."

Please do send me a message if you would like to ask any questions about the classes I offer. When my schedule allows, I do open up 1:1 tutoring after discussions between parent and teacher, so do please get in touch!

I have a Masters and a PGCE (professional teaching qualification) from the University of Oxford, and bags of experience teaching English and History. I believe in asking questions and sharing stories. I love it when my students tell me interesting stories of their own!

Some fun facts about me:

* I was a Women's History Network's Fellow 2019-2021 - they're supporting me to write a novel about Nancy Astor, the first woman to join the British House of Commons (she was an American actually, and she broke ALL the rules. Very cool!)

* When I was a teenager, I argued with Tony Blair (then Prime Minister) - and it was shown on the Evening News!

* My best friend Clare spent a summer working at Buckingham Palace - she has a LOT of good stories!

I look forward to meeting your learner in one of my classes soon!
