Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
After an assessment, we will work on literacy goals related to your learner's current levels. For early readers, we will work on sight words, decoding strategies, and comprehension strategies such as making predictions, retelling important events, problem/solution, discussing the lesson, and discussing how characters feel in the story or how their feelings have changed throughout the story. For more advanced readers, we will work on more complex decoding strategies such as decoding multisyllable words and vocabulary work. Our focus will shift to more complex comprehension such as main idea and details, comparing and contrasting, cause and effect, determining why a character made a certain choice, and summarizing texts.

All lessons, regardless of the level, will be individualized based on your learner's current level and needs. For instance, if your learner is great at decoding, but needs more support with comprehension, we can focus more on those types of strategies. Other times, students may be great at comprehension but need more support with decoding. Our focus will be to help your learner be able to be strategic as they are decoding and to demonstrate comprehension of the story.

I have been teaching elementary aged students literacy for over 16 years. I have experience with neurotypical and neurodiverse learners, along with gifted students. I believe that we must meet students where they are and help to foster independence and confidence in their abilities, while allowing their interest to help with book selection when possible. I make my lessons engaging and take the time to connect with them on a personal level so they feel comfortable during our time together.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from Roberts Wesleyan College
I have a Master's in Elementary and Special Education, a B.A. in Psychology. I am certified to teach in New York State and am also a certified Mindfulness for Children Practitioner. I have been teaching since 2006 and love to break things down and help students discover what works best for them. I have taught grades 1-6 in traditional schools and have experience providing home school instruction. My areas of focus are reading, math strategies, sight words, word study and motivating reluctant writers. I want my students to learn something new, but also discover a little bit about how they learn as that will help them for years to come. I often use humor to keep my students engaged and entertained during my classes. I live with my husband and two naughty cats in Florida. One of my favorite things is to the go to the beach and find fabulous shells. I look forward to seeing your child in one of my classes soon.
