There will be no "assigned" homework, but I can share activities that caregivers have the option of using at home with their child to help improve their reading skills. In my experience, children who are immersed in literacy experiences (from school, home, and tutoring) make the most progress, and the combined efforts can even close the existing reading gap completely.Assessment
I use informal assessments to discover where to begin with a student, as well as for monitoring progress, and for making instructional decisions.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
I offer Orton-Gillingham based instruction (currently tucked into an online format). Sessions take about 30 minutes to complete. If you have 2 children you'd like to enroll, I can potentially turn the class into "small group" rather than "individual" and tutor them at the same time. In addition to learning the skills needed to decode, lessons will include work around vocabulary, spelling, writing complete sentences, and fluency. I can also share activities that families can do at home to support their child's progress. I am a passionate Full Time Special Education (reading and writing) teacher with experience as an adjunct professor in two graduate programs (Special Education & Differentiating Instruction). I've been teaching in a public school setting for over 24 years now and have been trained in a variety of reading and writing instruction models. I have a Masters degree in Education (Learning Disabilities) and I use this formula on a daily basis with a variety of learners already and every one of my students has made growth. I believe that all children can learn to read. We just need to put in the work! In this particular "individual" class, I will provide your child with completely individualized 1:1 instruction catering to where your child's reading skills are at right now and guide them on the path to becoming independent readers. Once your child learns the tools for independent reading, the really wonderful things in life are going to open up for them! We’re going to put in a lot of work together, but I want you to know that it is going to pay off if your child simply keeps with it. Even before we’re finished, your child is going to be able to see their own progress, start gaining confidence in their own reading abilities, and feel really good about themselves. I’m not at all concerned about where they are at now with their reading, only where we will go from there. Let’s get started! I can’t wait to meet your child and help them become an independent reader!
Learning Goals
Students will learn to read (decode words), build vocabulary knowledge, improve spelling and writing skills, and increase reading fluency.

Supply List
Please have a piece of textured material in which the student can trace their finger over as needed (it can be fabric, textured paper, sandpaper, clay in a tray, etc.). This will be needed from time to time to assist with letter-reversal work and spelling. The online "Whiteboard" app/function that we used for writing/spelling instruction was Jamboard (which is ending services in 2024); we are moving to a new writing platform called Miro.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
- Jamboard
- Miro
