This is private tutoring in either elementary school math, beginning Latin, or science enrichment/challenge. (Writing is another area I tutor; feel free to inquire about that.) The skills, content, and concepts will depend on the needs of the learners and the objectives upon which the parents and I agree. Please note that if an existing public section has only a certain number of class meetings scheduled (for example five), the opportunity exists to schedule additional meetings—either during the same days/time slot or during mutually available days/times. This gives families the opportunity to try one-on-one tutoring with me to decide whether they want to continue. The instruction could involve at least one of (but not restricted to) the following features: MATH: 1) Important skills/concepts related to Common Core standards or topics of the learner's/parent's choosing; areas where the learner is struggling or needs extension/challenge. 2) Determining the learner's "cutting edge" and providing the next step(s) in learning. LATIN: 1) The acquisition of Latin language fundamentals using classical pronunciation; following the same grammar, vocabulary, word roots in English, and approach that I use in my group Latin classes. 2) Either starting from the beginning for the learner, or building onto what the student has previously learned in my Latin classes (at whichever level completed: my Level 1, 2, 3, or 4). SCIENCE: 1) Answering the multitude of science-related questions (primarily about astronomy/space exploration and weather) the child may have. 2) Pointing the learner into the right direction to discover additional answers. 3) Devising or recommending science activities (and perhaps doing those activities with the learner) that should foster discovery of fulfilling answers.

Hello all! After retiring from teaching elementary school languages, science, and math for 33 years in the classroom, I have been happily teaching on Outschool since May, 2020. I love to inspire students to learn through discovery, fuel their curiosity, and help them connect their learning with their everyday world—with a unique, age-appropriate sense of humor. (A parent once remarked, "My daughter says you are the funniest teacher she has ever had!") My Latin classes are different than typical programs, as they are child-centered, interest-based, and relevant to modern-era situations. The unique kind of fun gets the kids self-motivated to speak, write, and participate according to their individual comfort levels.
I have been a guest columnist on the kids page of a major city newspaper and occasional guest teacher at elementary schools. Besides teaching on Outschool, I have been teaching at a summer academic science camp for 20 years, and I have taught classes at a university's gifted and talented program for kids. Consulting with university scientists, meteorologists, and NASA has enhanced my science learning teaching. My father helped me, too, as he was a Ph.D. physicist. I can make content and concepts easy for kids to understand—whether it be fundamental or more advanced. Most of my teaching experience is with students ages 6 through 13, and I have a Master's degree in Education and current Elementary (Grades 1 through 8) Teaching Certificate.
Father of two college students, I stay fit, play sports, create art, and play piano/keyboard. I look forward to seeing you on the screen soon!
