Assignments
1-2 hours per week. Again, this is choose-your-own adventure. Students can do as much or as little work outside of one-on-one classes as they choose. If I develop a set curriculum for your student, I will expect them to follow it and keep up with all assignments for the duration of the course.Grading
Any kind of grade or assessment is available upon request depending on the length and intensity of the one-on-one instruction.Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 12
Interested in a class I offer but not available when sections are offered? Interested in a related subject that I don't offer a specific class for at this time? Does your learner have a specific set of interests they want to talk about, or are you looking for a curriculum designed just for your student? It's choose-your-own-adventure in this one-on-one class. I'm happy to do a set class length, individual sessions, or ongoing sessions; whatever works best for your family. Some examples of potential topics: individualized study in formal logic, specialized topics in ethics or political philosophy (such as Stoicism, Aristotelianism, classical liberalism, medical ethics, philosophy of law, etc), topics in the philosophy of mind and metaphysics, individualized novel or academic text studies, and more. I take a Socratic approach to my teaching, so your student should expect to be an engaged participant in their own learning, asking and answering questions and bringing their own ideas, thoughts, and perspectives to the table.
Learning Goals
Students will develop their analytical and critical thinking skills by engaging in independent study with an experienced instructor.
Students will actively engage with historical, literary, or philosophical material that gives them a greater understanding of themselves, their world, and their culture.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
I pride myself on being neutral; I do not approach my teaching from my own beliefs or pre-conceived notions about the world. I expect the same from my students. For a truly rigorous humanities education, no idea can go unchallenged or uninvestigated in an age-appropriate manner. As such, parents and guardians should understand that should they sign their student up for one-on-one instruction with me, I will approach the subject at hand with the academic rigor that it demands. Students should expect to be exposed to a wide variety of potentially controversial and divergent views in any humanities study. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.
Supply List
I will provide an individualized list to each student after the course of study is determined.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
2 Degrees
Master's Degree in Philosophy from Northern Illinois University
Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy from Illinois Wesleyan University
I have a BA in Philosophy with minors in Political Science and Greek and Roman Studies, as well as an MA in Philosophy with a concentration in Ethics and Political Philosophy. I’m the head coach of a competitive high school debate team and teach the liberal arts at a classical school. I’m also a professional creative writer and journalist.
I love helping students of all ages understand and interpret difficult subjects and learn how to crystallize their thoughts in writing and oral communication. I believe studying the humanities is a wonderful way to facilitate this kind of growth and learning.
