Beginner Level
The teacher will demonstrate how codes and ciphers are designed. The teacher will then show the students how to crack beginner-level codes. The teacher will check that students understand how the codes work, so they can go on to create their own for family and friends to break! Students will start by observing the teacher breaking messages in Morse Code. The teacher explains the code step by step and then let students practice on their own. The teacher will repeat this process of demonstration, step by step instruction, and students showing what they learned for Morse Code. The teacher will then show then repeat the same process with the Rail Fence Cipher. The teacher will demonstrate step by step and then have students show themselves breaking the code to ensure comprehension and ability to replicate the code. *Please note a recording of this session will post in the classroom after class is completed. Breaking codes and ciphers takes practice. We will run through each cipher several times but the student will want to watch the video again to help practice the process.
Learning Goals
Students will use math, language, and critical thinking skills to break different codes and ciphers.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My passions in life are my family and teaching.
I'm currently entering my 10th year of teaching. I'm teaching 12th grade English, AP Language & Composition, and AP Literature & Composition.
In the past, I've been in both public and private schools, and I've taught everything from English and Creative Writing to Guitar, Chess, and Speech & Debate. I'm lucky enough to have taught students ranging from 1st to 12th grade.
I have a BA in English from the University of Florida and an MAT in English Education from Western Carolina University.
When I'm not in the classroom, I love to spend time with my wife and daughter, read, play and listen to music, watch sports, play video games, and write.
