Assessment
I will assess student strengths and areas of need periodically and will adjust the curriculum based on these assessments.Class Experience
US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner - Advanced Level
In this 1:1 tutoring class, students will learn how to approach challenging text by utilizing effective reading comprehension strategies. Comprehension strategies may include: utilizing background knowledge/relating to real-world experiences, questioning, making inferences, synthesizing, determining importance, identifying genre structure, and creating sensory images. I will assess student strengths and areas of need during our first session and determine the best comprehension strategies based on my assessment. Parent and student input is also welcomed and appreciated. Whether your student can't relate to literature assigned in class, needs help reading a challenging textbook, or wants to be quizzed on a driving manual to get a driver's license, I can teach your student how to approach each assignment in a way that is effective for success. I create a learning environment where students feel comfortable taking academic risks. Additionally, by sharing areas of confusion, students can improve in areas they would otherwise feel uncomfortable addressing in other contexts. Furthermore, many students are interpersonal learners and can enhance comprehension by discussing their ideas aloud. Being able to express their thoughts in a 1:1 session helps many students realize they have valuable insights and well-informed concepts to share with others, which can increase confidence. Note: Related writing assignments can be included in our tutoring sessions. I teach students how to write the five-paragraph essay (which can be expanded for longer assignments), short answer responses, and how to meet the requirements for various types of writing such as research or informational text, opinion, persuasive, argumentative, creative, etc.
