Class Experience

I am a student-centered educator who listens and aims to allow students to feel heard and seen in the classroom. I want all of my students to feel empowered and engaged in every lesson. I believe that students bring important and valuable contributions to the classroom. I aim to empower learner voices in a way that they become confident critical thinkers who can pose questions and engage with their peers in a collaborative learning process. I treat my students with care, kindness and listen with attention because I value the student-teacher, teacher-student relationship.
As a critical pedagogy educator, I believe students learn best when they are having fun when they feel heard, safe, and accepted. Learning about diversity and inclusion through stories and relatable characters is a fun way to invite learners to engage in critical thinking. As a college professor, I teach a course titled "Race, Class, and Gender Acceptance in the Classroom." In this course, I prepare undergraduates who plan to be K-12 teachers by centering inclusive and culturally competent instruction. In my doctoral work, I developed a curriculum to teach and invite young learners about the value of diversity and inclusion. My MA and Ph.D. are in Ethnic Studies and Development Studies and Social Change, respectively.
Learners will need paper and art supplies like crayons, markers to draw after the story.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
25 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
As a critical pedagogy educator, it is clear that inclusion and diversity are concepts that even young learners can practice in order to build a more just learning community.
