I'm sure you've heard of improv in acting. This class is all about improv in writing. What fun! In this ongoing class, learners will have fun exploring the different aspects of story writing by completing structured writing activities that force spontaneity and allow for creativity. Young writers will explore settings, actions, feelings, characters, plot, genre, and more. This class is a judgement-free zone and students are encouraged to share their writing with the group. Each lesson will explore only one of these topics. Each 50 minute class will be structured as follows: Mini-lesson 10 minutes; Guided Writing 10 minutes; Writing Exercise #1 10 minutes; Writing Exercise #2 10 minutes; Sharing 10 minutes. (Times may vary depending on the number of learners in the class.) Students can join or leave at any time as lessons are independent and do not depend on previous lessons for learners to be successful.
Learning Goals
Learners will develop flexibility in writing as well as writing confidence as they write in a judgement-free environment. Learners will create a bank of story ideas that can later be developed into proper stories if so desired as they work through various writing exercises and the sharing of ideas with peers.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I have taught elementary school children for 33 years. I earned my undergrad degree in Early Childhood Education from Elizabeth City State University and my master's degree in Elementary Education from North Carolina State University. I am also certified in elementary math education and gifted education. I taught first grade for 14 years, fourth grade for 11 years, second grade for 1 year, and third grade for 4 years. I was a curriculum coach for the remaining two years. I recently retired from public school education. Teaching elementary students, I taught all of the core subjects: Reading & Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies. I am a published author and poet. My specialty is teaching writing skills to young learners, ages 7-10. I offer classes and camps in poetry, writing skills development, and creative writing. My writing lessons always include a model exemplar and guided practice before learners work on assignments independently. I am fulfilled when learners grow from writing a story idea to writing a well developed story. I love seeing children excited about writing! My hobbies include sewing, machine and hand embroidery, crochet, and writing stories for children. I live with my husband and two dogs.
